My son has got a very bad congestive tonsilitis and they have prescribed this syrup. Problem is its REALLY nasty and he has only managed to keep 2 doses down so far. Was so poorly yesterday we ended up in the local childrens hospital with him but they were very unhelpful tbh. They have said that it is the only treatment for his condition and that we have to persevere...so...any tips? He wont drink juice so cant disguise it in that. Not eating much (understandably) and getting very agitated about it all. He is never normally a problem to take medicine..its just this stuff. Am really worried that if he cant take it we will end up in hospital with him on IV antibiotics which, obviously, I want to avoid. HELP!

Fresh orange can hide it quite well. Ice cream is other thing I used to mix it into.

Failing that we used just have a sweet on standby for afterwards. Giving him great praise for taking it and telling him he would feel lots better for taking it.

Good luck, it is horrid when they are ill and you cannot get them to take the medicine.

SantasFattymumma · 10/12/2006 12:28

the brutal way is to use a syringe..just squirt it down teh back of his throat. buit it is horrid and i always worry about them choking.

I try mixing it in with yogurt or one of those fromage frais things. it is smooth and so wont hurt for him to eat it and its thick enough to cover the medicine.

i hope he gets better soon.

Bribery.

Whatever works for your ds. It is not as if it will be a regular occurence. sweets/stickers/toys/story.... there must be something he'd like.

We use a syringe for DS - mainly to try and keep the sugar away from his teeth - he doesn't need it to be too far back, just in the middle of his tonge, and have had no probs with choking.

My brother had to have pills every day and had a chocolate and some lemonade to help them go down.

WanderingTroll · 10/12/2006 13:12

Put it in a smoothie? Can you mix icing sugar into it? Will he let you brush his teeth vigourously afterwards?!

Second the ice cream/yogurt.

How old is he?

WonderCod · 10/12/2006 13:21

nothing works ime

nutcracker · 10/12/2006 13:22

I use a syringe and squirt it in in one go and then before they have chance to complain, I produce chocolate.

nutcracker · 10/12/2006 13:23

Although I can't get medised down Ds in any way shape or form.

WonderCod · 10/12/2006 17:11

expatinscotland · 10/12/2006 17:36

Having this problem w/DD1 just now.

NOTHING works.

She has to be pinned down and forced w/a syringe.

She then tries to puke it up.

It is awful.

Sympathies.

HOpe he feels better soon.

Hi just seen this as have been off work (only have computer at work) with poorly kids, same trouble. With my boy I ended up saying I'll have some then you have some and tasting a bit (agreed is yuk) and pulling a face shouting disgusting, he thought it was funny and copied me kept going til he'd had spoonful. Repeat 4xday doing well now. J

PetitFilou1 · 19/12/2006 13:40

Use the syringe that comes with Nurofen for children. Produce a chocolate and say he can have it if he takes the medicine. It used to require two of us to do it, now our ds will usually take medicine ok from one of us provided there is chocolate on offer. Good luck with it....

ChristmasisComing · 19/12/2006 13:40

When my ds had it, I gave him a tiny amount on the spoon followed by a grape, or strawberry or something else he liked (he hates sweets or chocolate). Took the best part of an hour before i got a whole spoonful down but there was no other way. And i have to do that with ALL medicine (eg nurofen, calpol etc)

Could not hide it in anything as he notices and then won't eat it, and he was sick when I tried the syringe (projectile V all over the floor - glad i have wooden floor )
