toys, puzzels, books and other crap is taking over the house

How do you store it all so it is actually useable? We have a toy box but you can never find all the parts of anything to actually play with it. We have a box for books that kind of works by is now too small.
Kids are 1,and 2 so this is just the start of it.

A friend of mine got one of those plastic sets of drawers (like these www.argos.co.uk/m/static/Product/partNumber/7192533.htm)
and organised things into them, e.g crafts, Lego, cars etc. She stuck pictures of what was inside on the front of each drawer so child knew what to find & where to put it back when they'd finished with it.
