Does your nursery administer Calpol?

Apparently there is some discussion at my son's nursery that parents would like the staff to administer Calpol. I was really suprised this was an option (unless it had been perscribed) and I just wanted to know if anyone else had this at their nursery??

Yes the nursery my dc went to did but I think they rang me 1st before giving it to them or maybe informed me later i can't remember propertly I suppose a temperature in a little one left un treated can be really dangerous.

Yes, if he's at all unwell then we discuss at drop off if they should give it if he needs it (they offer to ring but I'm happy to leave it to their discretion).

Yes my nursery will give it but a) you have to give written consent and B) you then have to pick them up asap.

Yes. If DD or teething or simillar we sign a bottle of calpol into them in the morning and leave it up to them to give some if she needs it. If they do give some we just have to sign a bit of paper at collection time so we know when she had it (so we don't accidentally give too much when she gets home). It would bother me more to be honest if they wouldn't give it and she had to suffer all day if in discomfort, and it's impractical for me to leave work and collect her / go in to give her calpol (they are 15 miles from my work base) every time she's teething etc.

Yes, if we know they might need it, we can take in unprescribed calpol, and fill in a form.
If a sudden temperature occurs during the day, they will contact you, and ask if you want some administered. If they can't get hold of either of us, they have used some without permission, but suspect that's because they know I just say yes if they think it's needed, and I don't usually dose at home, so not going to be double dosing. Not sure they would do that without knowing the parents attitude to medicines to.

Everything else needs to be prescribed before they will administer.

My childminder does. I think we had to sign a form when he first started about it. And she calls first, I guess in case we gave him some that morning but forgot to mention. I keep a couple of the calpol sachets in his bag just in case.
I do know of a nursery that will only give if prescribed though, which is a faff.

Yes mine does - I have consented to them giving it whenever he needs it. They ask me to sign a form if they have ever given it - which has only been twice in the last year.

in certain circumstances

they ask you to get the sachets, and will give a single dose from the sachet if you have specifically consented in writing that morning. we also had to sign to say when they'd last had a dose.

My nursery will administer but we have to provide it and give written consent in advance each time - so if I think she might need it I have to take it in and sign a form at drop off.

My nursery provides the calpol and administers it. They will ring you first to ask if they can give it then you sign the form when you pick them up.

Both nurseries I have used have done this. They provide the calpol. But you need to give written permission beforehand (I signed mine when I registered DD at the nursery) and must also sign a form to say you will inform them if you give them calpol before you drop DCs off so they don't unwittingly overdose. DDs nursery almost always phones to double check it's ok before dosing anyway.

Both nurseries my DC went to would administer, and supply, calpol and/or ibuprofen, as long as they had parental consent (signed when they were registered)

Yes. They provide and administer it, we sign a form if they need to. Eminently sensible. It's stopped DD being sent home on more than one occasion when she had a bit of a cold.

Yes mine does. My daughter has only been in nursery for 2 months but the one time she was ill they called me to collect her and asked if they could give Calpol. I signed a consent form too.

Yes, usually call first even though I've given written consent to tell me she has temperature & if it doesn't go down I need to collect her

Yep, they call to say dc has a temp, can we give Calpol. I say yes. They phone back 15mins later and say temp hasn't gone down please collect. Every time Grin

You can also take Calpol or Nurofen in if they're teething and ask them to give it at certain times or if dc is unhappy.

Mine doesn't. Today I had to rush from work, buy Calpol on the way and give it to her when I got there, then take her home.

I wish our nursery would administer it to help their discomfort before the parent arrives.

My dd's nursery will only give it if it has a pharmacy label on so I had to get some on the minor ailments scheme as gp wouldn't prescribe it "just in case". She once had a temp and I'd sent normal calpol in and they wouldn't give it her my mil had to go and pick her up.

Yes. There is a pre-completed consent form to cover it but they always ring first too. I go and collect dcs straight away if it happens but nice to know the temp is already on its way down when I get there.

Yes. They call and ask permission if DS has a high temp and then I sign a form when I collect him. I'm happy with this.

Yes, I have to sign it in and it has to be proper calpol, not an own brand alternative.
When my son fell and hurt his mouth they called me to get him (required an a&e visit) and they had given him calpol when I arrived

Mine used to but it seems to have changed recently and they're now "not allowed" to give them calpol.
