DS only has his school shoes, I'm going to get him another pair but can only afford one more, do I go winter boots or trainers? (He has sand shoes in PE kit at school...) :/

How old is he and does he play out much in the winter or more likely to be inside?

Something waterproof

I say trainers. As they will work whatever the weather. My boys wear trainers all year round and won't wear boots but have wellies for when needed at school, and crocs for the beach in summer. That's all they need and don't have to cost alot. Most of their shoes are from asda or sports direct

Trainers. My son lives in them outof school. Boots never get worn except for a pair of cheapo wellies.

Yes, trainers make more sense. And I can get some wellies very cheaply.
