can anyone advise? Am quite new here so not sure if this is the right place or not! My DD2 (5 months) is recovering from tonsilitis which she had amoxycilin for - I've given her the antibiotics for 5 days and yesterday she came up with the worst nappy rash I have ever seen (dd1 never had nappy rash...but then dd1 didn't have antibiotics until she was nearly 2!). She is bleeding. Are they linked? Could something else be causing it? How can I help clear it up? At the moment using water and cotton wool not wipes, lots of fresh air and nappy free time and sudocreme..any other ideas? She wakes up and cries every time she wees or poos - it's reallly upsetting! Thank you!

It might be thrush, as she's been on antibiotics. Canesten cream will sort it out if it is - it's OK to use on babies.

Oh bless her-how horrible.

I fined Metanium to be the best ointment around.

I have also used beaten egg white brushed onto the bottom area and allowed to dry before the nappy goes on-acts as a sealant.

Try the metanium ,it really is fab-stains yellow though...

Metanium is also a great nappy cream for really sore bums, I agree with WWB for immediate treatment but Metanium is good for when the bum is clearing up.

Thank you loads - how would I know if it's thrush though? What are the indicators? Thank you so much for replying so quickly!

agree it sounds like thrush - my dd only had antibiotics twice and thrush both times ds2 has kidney reflux and on antibiotics every day gets thrush every couple of weeks you can get a script from your gp or cream from the pharmacist - timodine or nystaform HC

Make up a container of chammomile tea and use that on cotton wool to clean (it is very soothing).

to help clear it up try giving a few drops of grapefruit seed extract in 4 oz of water and the same solution for wiping with at changing time. use silk wipes if possible and put a silk liner her nappy.

When ds1 had a really bad rash I would put him in the tub and use the shower sprayer to gently clean his bottom instead of wiping it. He just couldn't stand any kind of pressure on his skin.

Agree with the others that it could well be thrush.
