How much should babies sleep?

My 11 week old seems to sleep an awful lot recently. After a week or so of hating daytime napping she now can't stop! Last night she slept 10 hours overnight without waking 8-6 and then today has slept for hours at a time.

I had her weighed and she is putting on weight normally and when she is awake she is smiley and alert but is it normal for her to sleep so much? I can barely keep her awake more than an hour at a time!

Sounds like DS - he really liked his sleep.

I think some just need more than others, DS still needs about 15 hrs in every 24 or he gets very grumpy and he's 8 months. Sometimes he'll have a few days when he sleeps most of the day, ie nap for an hour, up for 30 mins then back to bed for another hour - health visitor seemed to think it was normal and so long as eating, wet and dirty nappies and happy enough when he was awake there was no problem.

Sounds normal, especially in such a young baby. Ds was very similar and still does 11 hours at night then 2.5 hours nap at 21 months! An hour awake at this age is perfectly normal.

Every baby is different and the range of normal is huge. I'm pretty sure they go through a development leap around that time which can cause some babies to sleep loads as it tires them out a others mine to find it hard to sleep as they are so wired.

I think there's definitely a dev leap happening. Lots of sleeping and also hysterical crying which she doesn't normally do. And when she's awake she's doing loads of new stuff like reaching for toys etc. Tiring for me though!
