Meningitis B injection for 2 month old baby's!!!

Hi all,
Desperately looking for some advise, my son had a letter for his 2nd immunisations yesterday on going to the doctor for the injections it turned out the letter was sent in error a week early my son is only 11 weeks 5 days, on talking to the nurse she gave us a leaflet and said that all baby's born after March 2015 are to have meningitis b injections too instead of the usual 2 he would get a 3rd injection, I am so confused and worried would you let your little one have this injection they also provide paracetamol as the little ones get very poorly, very high temperature, rash, loss of appetite and won't be able to sleep - your thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated ??

I would definitely get the extra vaccination. My ds is 4 months now so just missed out but I will be getting it him as soon as it's offered ( they will be offering it to older babies later). I am a microbiologist so understand the science behind vaccines and cannot emphasise enough how important they are! The symptoms you describe can happen after any vaccination and are the signs of an immune response which is good as it means the body is producing immunity. I was still worried though when ds had his jabs and got some calpol in but he didn't need it in the end :-) I am more worried about meningitis it's a horrific illness and very dangerous. Anything I can do to minimise the risks of him getting it must be a good thing!

Thank you for your reply, other moms I have spoken to have said the same thing they would do it too, when my DS had his first injections he was very poorly ended up having to give him carpol after which he managed to sleep, I guess it's the way the nurse put it to us that filled us with doubt, it made us feel like babies born after March are Test babies for this new injection. I just feel pumping little ones with so many strange things might not be the best for them but your reply has made me feel a bit better and less worried :)

My dd2 died from meningitis.PLEASE get the vaccination it could happen to you!

I paid for my 11mo to get her bexsero vaccination. It's probably one of the most popular jabs at my local travel clinic. I saw many babies there.

Meningitis is a very serious illness. And men b is the most common strain in circulation. I think it protects against 75-80% of men b variations.

You don't even get much herd immunity with this one as its newly free. So take it up oleas

I mean she got them when she was a new born. She's still missing her last booster at over 12mo. And I will have to pay. I would love her to be able to get it on the NHS.

I paid privately for my baby to have it, I would have jumped at the chance to get it free.

As others have said, get him the vaccination and be extremely grateful that he is eligible for it.

I paid privately. DD wouldn't take the paracetamol offered and had none of the listed side effects. They aren't inevitable. But the consequences of Men B are awful. I'm very sorry for your loss sugar.

DS doesn't qualify, missed the deadline by 6 weeks ( ) but I was speaking to the nurse whilst having his other injections done and she said of all the vaccinations, the men b is the one she would encourage people to have done even if they don't have any others.

It's been administered to over 1million children and babies worldwide with no safety concerns according to the NHS website.

My daughter had it yesterday - just whack in some calpol and she will be fine.

My brother died from meningitis B, so yes, a fever and nights discomfort are worth it.

I do understand the worry though, I was terrified of DDs first vacs!

We have to pay for it in Australia. Three jabs (incl boosters) for my two DC will add up to around $800 (400 pounds). It will need some budgeting, but I still want to get it done. Wish we could get it free here!

Thanks, I am pleased that you have come to your decision. It's a vaccination that was a long time coming. Too late for my dd2 but hopefully it will save many many little lives.
If I had another child I'd be banging on the surgery door for vaccination.

My son is two days too old to be offered it. We've got to find somewhere to do it privately.

Thank you all, we have just had all the vaccinations done my DS seems so happy and fine the nurse said to give him calpol regardless as he will get a high fever - as he is happy and chirpy shall I give it to him regardless or wait until a fever sets in any advice would be appreciated - thank you!

Yes, give him the Calpol as advised - he may or may not get a fever, but you're better pre-empting it.

I worried about vaccinations too. :) It's all part of being a parent. I even got like..8 different doctor's opinions on it because I was so nervous. They assured me it would be fine. Where I live you can't even put your child into school if they don't have their vaccinations.

My son needed Tylonol after, but he is fine. I think I read vaccinations can even help a baby defend against common bacterial infections. I know after vaccinations I always felt tired myself, but I'd rather feel sick for 1 day instead of catching an illness.

The main thing with babies is to NEVER give them vaccines if they are already sick (like if they have a cold or flu) always make sure they are not fighting off anything else, wait a few weeks. Then after the vaccination let baby rest for 4 days up to a week (try not to bring the baby out in the cold and provide lots and lots of sleep). :)
