i picked him up to cuddle him him and he sunk his teeth into my shoulder!hes never done it before, infact hes never been violent in anyway ever, even when others 2 year olds were doing whole hitting biting thing.do you think hes seen it at school?he wont tell me why he did it.i put him down and told him off, telling him it was naughty thing to do and asked why he did it.i thought at 5 he is old enough to know it would hurt and is wrong!

you did the right thing

I'd just wait and see what he does over the next few weeks

although I might be tempted to have another little chat at bedtime when he's more relaxed .. not accusing just wondering why

My dd went through a dreadful biting phase at the beginning of the summer (she's also 5). She left nasty bite prints on her brother several times after even the smallest of fallings out. We had a zero tolerance stand on it but she continued and did it two or three more times before her brother gave in and bit her back! I don't encourage revenge attacks by any means but it did cure the problem straight away....

Sometimes they do it as they are overloaded emotionally and don't know what to do with themselves. So he may have been bowled over with love and just bitten.

more likely he was being silly/testing, etc. but worth a thought perhaps?

Ds (3) has bitten both me and dh on a few occasions, generally when he's tired and having a cuddle. He always chews his teddy's nose and occasionally his teddy's ears, though, whilst he's unwinding and I genuinely think he forgets that while it's fine for teddy it hurts us. Never done it out of spite / in naughtiness.
Think you putting him down and telling him off was the right thing to do. Could just have been too tired from school to process the consequences of what he was doing iyswim. Would follow twiglett and wait and see if this happens again.
