Single size mattress suggestions

We're getting ready to move our 4yo into a standard single bed. Any suggestions for the best mattresses? What firmness should we look at? I asked at John Lewis recently and they recommended an open coil firm mattress for a growing child. (Despite the "firm" rating, they said it's softer than a pocket sprung mattress.)

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

You know I would not put as much thought into it and go buy a medium priced mattress with a good protector . That feels comfy to you

We've just done the same, I found pocket sprung mattresses too bouncy so we've gone for a medium firm memory foam mattress with a washable cover. We couldn't get dd off it in the shop, it was so comfy!
