Baby's bum is bleeding

My wee boy just did a skittery poo (his second today, usually he's a one-poo-a-day type of baby). Anyway, he can't have been sitting in it longer than 5mins and it's made his bum cheeks red raw and bleeding. Is this normal? Fyi, he's not teething, but has been under the weather the last couple of days. I've sudocremed it, but doesn't seem to be bothered by it :(

ooh - poor him. A thin layer of sudocrem will help but I used metanium when nappy rash got bad which often did a better job. That and lots of nappy-off time.

We had this a couple of times with my DD. Never really worked out what had caused it. We thought maybe an excess of fruit. Was a bit weird as it seems to cause a lot of damage in a short period of time.
She was bothered by it. Was quite painful for a short while.
We just treated it and that was that.
We found bepanthen to be very good.
