Weaning

I started weaning my 7 month old last month at 6 months. Started off with purées and she was fine. Then about 2 weeks in got a sickness bug and now everytime I put the spoon in her mouth she chokes and gags and is retching.

Tonight I let her gum some bananas as I thought maybe the spoon was making her sick but this time she was actually sick?! I'm wondering what to do should I leave the weaning or carry on? It's making her really distressed as she really screams.

What happens if you let her put the food in her mouth herself?

HitShappens · 04/07/2015 20:16

That's what I did today with a banana let her hold it and gum it, she chews like normal but once it's at the back of her throat she gags and then throws up Sad she then screams so much she won't try any more

She doesn't always throw up, she did today but it is mainly gagging and really retching as though she is going to throw up lots of burps etc

Don't worry for now, keep going with milk and try again really gently with food.

My son got a sickness bug around a year old, and he barely ate or nearly two weeks afterwards, I think he was too upset by the process of being sick. He would eat crackers though, and I wonder if crackerbread sit something similarly
gummable might work for you? Is she ok with milk?

Maybe take a break for a few days and try again? She could still be a bit off after the bug and just need a time out from it.

That said my DD did a LOT of gagging during her weaning. They have a very sensitive gag reflex in the beginning and toning it down is a part of the weaning process.

But if it's upsetting your DD I'd hold off for a couple of days and then start back very casually, letting her set the pace and even just stick her fingers in some stuff and lick them first off.

I have tried plain rice cakes callamia but the same thing happens. but I could always try again thanks for your advice Flowers

She is absolutely fine with her milk, weaned her off the breast at 6 months and is now drinking 6oz or so every 4 hours so no problem there. She's thriving and beginning to crawl but it's just worrying me that she won't eat!
