School settling in period

I have a son starting reception in September. Afternoons for a week and a half (1.20pm-3.20pm) and then mornings only for a week (8.55am-12.10pm). Just wondering how the follow up hospital appointments that involves, and an eye operation today) just... How?? My boss is either going to sack me or laugh me out the office!

Made absolutely no sense, I had meant to say, he's had a broken leg, chicken pox and an operation today which has pretty much annihilated my annual leave. I work a 45 minute bus ride away from home and school, so I'm stuffed.well and truly.

I'ts fucking ridiculous, isn't it? Plenty of kids cope perfectly well with being in nursery from 8-6 every day from the age of 6 months, but suddenly when they get to school the thinking is they can't handle more than a couple of hours away from home. Have you been in touch with local childminders? Most childminders do pick-ups, and if they're near enough to the school might well be up for going in once for the 'settling in' kids on top of the regular pick-up. Just a thought. Although, then you'd have to do a 'settling in' period with a childminder as well ... aargh!

I don't have an answer, but in the same situation. And I work very flexible shifts, and it's still going to be a nightmare!!! 2 mornings one week, then 3 mornings the second week, then 3 full days. How can anyone with a job manage that? I also gave a younger child who does 2 days at nursery...

I'd ask for him to start full time asap. He's entitled to a full time place.

Could Dad do some of the pickups\drop offs?

Unpaid leave (parental leave) is possible.

I'd be telling school that wasn't possible, and he could start FT first, second or third week, but half days wernt possible.

Makes me so glad our school start the kids at different times ( Mon, wed, Mon) so you may need to find additional childcare, but for a full day.

Can dad grandparents or aunties /uncle's help out with some pick ups or drop offs. Or as pp said ask for some unpaid leave

At my school we are doing 5 x half days and then full time.

For those families who are unable to arrange childcare during the 5 half days, we offer the chance to come back to Nursery (on-site) for a relaxed afternoon.

Speak to your local authority. You are entitled to a full time place from the beginning of the term.

At my DS' school they're starting full time from day 1 and just saying that we can stay a max of 10 mins in the morning to get them settled. Ask the school if it's possible or friends and family to help.
