That's what my 2.5 yr old says to ANYTHING I ask him! I try to keep a clam voice and explains what/why I'm asking but he shouts over me, it's exhausting and I feel so close to shouting back

My DS is 2.5 and likes the word no too. And mine.
DD is 4, she never did this.

My dd is the same! Wherever possible I try to offer a choice so in theory she has to say yes. It sometimes works but not always.

My ds has just turned 1 in the past few weeks - I get no, a finger wag, and a head shake to pretty much everything I say to him at the moment. The next few years are going to be fun

mine has just thrown a hissy fit and slapped and kicked me he booted me so hard it actually hurt so i put my hands over my face and rubbed my leg like it hurt (it actually did) he cried and rubbed his own leg in sympathy then he rubbed his blanky on my leg to make it better bless him!

Bearfox my DS also just turned 1. He isn't saying no yet, but EVERYTHING involves big head shaking, groaning, eyes squeezed shut, chubby hands and arms pushing me away....mealtimes are hideous. From his expression you would imagine I was offering him dog poo or something.

Have you tried the 'shall we put your x or y top on' for example rather than a direct demand? I have some success with this method.

Yes, I normally let him choose his clothes. There are some things I won't let him pick though, tonight was no to dinner so he got none. And it's more like things that might hurt him, I tell him to stop and get told no. I obviously stop him but then let kicked slapped you name it

LH, that all sounds familiar, apart from the mealtimes - ds loves his food!

Jeez, that is starting here too with our one year old. Grabbing at TV equipment and sky box, hands in dog bowl, trying to climb stairs that aren't safe...NO is completely ignored and dragging him away leads to mega tears...

Everything just seems such a joke to him. So we are trying to create some element of fear in him, so he starts to differentiate danger to himself with having a big laugh at mummy and daddy's expense....we are trying fairly sharp loud shouts of No, and very fast reactions...startling him more than before is leading to slight reduction in the smirks.

This won't help at all because your son is much older. I just find this discussion very interesting.

I agree 100% with 'if you won't eat this dinner then you get nothing'. My very respected paediatrician has insisted this is correct from the moment we started weaning. Bringing out even one alternative if he rejects something (that you know he can eat) is a giant mistake and nothing but a creator of rods for your back...

It was something I know he likes, if I give him new food then I give it along side something else I know hi likes, and I introduce it quite a few time so he get familiar with it. I wouldn't force him to eat something i know he really doesn't like but I'm not, like you said, bringing out meal after meal.
