my dd is 16mth (well 16 and a half ) when she fills her nappy she has certain areas of the sitting room which she does it and she squats whilst doing it, should I be getting a potty for her, I don't want to be rigid and think right I've got to start training her now coz she is quite young, not sure what to do

I might be temoted to get a potty in now and have it round the house so your DD gets used to what it is. But I really think 16 months is too early to think about proper potty training. Children are normally aged between 2 and 3 years, many nearer to 3. You get the odd child trained earlier, but not that many IME. If you wait till she is ready and showing all the classic signs of readiness it will be over and done with in a few days, rather than a lengthy process taking weeks/months.

Telling you is about to wee/poo is one; or being able to recognise the signs she is about to. Not all get tot his point and need some encourgaement - but at least telling you when ther are actually doing it.

Being uncomfortable in their dirty nappy.

I'd say it is pretty importnat that they can pull their own clothes down, so they are capable of taking themselves there.
