The big move from cot to bed. Will it mean no more daytime naps??

My DS1 is 2.4 now and very happy in his cot, wearing a sleeping bag and not trying to climb out. Wondering how long I can keep this going.....
He naps for 2 hours every day and I have a DS2 who is 4 months old, so this nap is a wonderful thing.
I am a bit fearful of the transition from cot bed with sides on to no sides. Will this mean no more naps??
I could do with the cot for my DS2, but I am currently considering bying a second hand cot for him so I can keep my older son in this routine for as long as possible.
What did you do? Reassurance needed please

i would get a cot/travel cot for 2nd child. No point rushing these things. They feel secure in the cots and I think even when they go to a big bed it's nice to let them have the option of regressing from time to time. Whatever helps them sleep.

Keep him in a cot for as long as possible! We were forced to drop the sides off our twins' cots at 2.5 and it's been a nightmare; they won't nap, bedtimes have gone to pot, and their behaviour has been awful ever since as they aren't getting enough sleep. Don't be in a rush to move up to beds!

Ds started climbing out of his cot at 20 months. He is also v tall, do we moved him into a bed then, a low single bed. He continued to nap - in bed- well after his third birthday.

I'm planning on keeping DS in his cot until he's 15 if it means he keeps napping! He is two next week and had a three hour nap yesterday...as soon as we moved DD into a bed her naps stopped.

No idea - both mine dropped naps at 18 months, way before they were moved into beds unhelpful, but still jealous of those who had daytime naps until they started school, 10 years later

I have a similar situation boys are 22 months and 3 weeks and don't want to kick my eldest out of his cot bed! He too sleeps for 2 hours during the day. The baby is ridiculously long and won't fit his bedside crib for very long (we naively thought it may last till christmas) so I think we'll be looking at a second hand cot....

Dd1 stayed in her toddler bed with no issues when she transitioned from cot to bed at 2. It just didn't appear to occur to her that she could escape. She doesn't necessarily stay in it well at 4...

With my DC1 it did mean the end of daytime naps (after a brief period of really trying to enforce them and then deciding that wasting an hour every day just wasn't worth it) but with DC2 the naps continued until just before 3rd birthday when they were naturally dropped anyway. They were both around 2y4m when we moved them, although one difference is we removed the sleep bags and introduced the duvet a couple of months before moving them to a bed. I think it depends on the temperament of the child, and interestingly my DC1 was a fab sleeper from about 8wks whereas DC2 didn't sleep well until about 2y, but DC2 proved more reliable down the line when it came to naps. Basically there is no real predicting how it will go I think. Good luck x

Mine went into beds at 2 years. No problems, they had lovely sleeps in their new beds!

Keep him in a cot! My twins are 2.8 and still happily in cots, no plan to move them yet. They are currently napping and I am having a much needed rest.

Keep him in the cot. My 18 month old ds also loves his cot, sleeps really well and naps for at least 2 hours a day. He giggles when we put him into his cot! DD is due in a couple of weeks and we were thinking about moving him at Christmas. I spoke to a few friends who have older kids and the advice has unilaterally been "no!!- let sleeping babies lie!!". Obviously we have a few months yet but I also have a feeling he might feel a bit (well, quite literally) pushed out of his bed by the baby!

We put our 18 month ds straight into a full size single and he now naps and sleeps for longer. So in our experience it's actually improved things! I'm aware we've been very lucky though.
