Travelling with an infant

DP and I are taking our baby to Hong Kong for a week when he will be 9 weeks old.

What do I need to know about travelling overseas with a baby? Apart from his passport - what else do I need to think about? Your collective wisdom would be appreciated!

Is your baby formula or breast fed? Obviously you'll need to think about sterilising gear if you express or use bottles. You can buy reusable bags that go in the microwave which I used to use on holidays.

I would want to know about the water too. Not all bottled water is ok, as it can be very high sodium content

What time of year? And where about in HK?
We found a sling much easier than a pushchair (tho pushchairs are becoming more common out there, it was easier not to need to find the lifts!). If you do have in a sling, don't let the back of his legs burn. And you'll need a sun hat. Sunscreen isn't advised at that age, so will need to keep covered if your out there in the summer.

Easy to get nappies out there.

My friend lives in HK and has recently had twins. She imports their formula from Australia at a very high cost as she's not happy with the safety of the formula on sale there so I'd take your own stock if you do FF.

Don't have any other tips. We are taking our baby abroad when he will be 4 months and I plan on taking his flat pram to sleep in overnight so he has a familiar sleeping environment.

HK is very much like any other international city and has most stuff available to buy although often at high prices. What time of year? It's extremely hot and humid in the summer so vital to keep baby hydrated (and yourself if bf), plenty of suncream etc.

I think the main issue will be keeling baby cool and shaded. We have an extendable hood for our pram that has vents on the side. Not everyone travels with a bugaboo like we do though!
Flights are pretty easy with pre-walkers so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. He will cry at some point but other travellers are generally very understanding.
Otherwise it should be pretty easy, I hope you are getting some sleep, enjoy!
