Godchild presents

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, or if there are a 100 similar threads somewhere else, but what do people buy godchildren??? Please! No idea what to get godson on the event of being made godparent...

As a Christening present? - a child's bible; silver cross; classic children's book. (Assuming child is a baby).

As an ordinary present - whatever you might buy for any other child that age Wiked Uncle is good inspiration.

He is 14 months, and there is no plan to have a christening, but I feel being asked to be godparent calls for that sort of present. Parents not remotely religious so some of the traditional gifts would seem odd.

If there's no Christening (and rightly if his parents are not religious), how can you be a godparent? God parenting is about religious and spiritual guidance.

I got godson a bag of happiness [from notonthehighstreet.com] and framed it in a box frame with a photo of him newborn in it.
For god daughter I got Big Momma makes the world and Amelia to Zora: Twenty-Six Women Who Changed the World

For other gifts

For god son I bought the toot toot car series.
For god daughter I bought playmobil sets.

So they get one of those at Christmas, Easter and their birthday.

Hardback book collection eg Beatrix Potter ... nice to read but keep forever.

We got our godson a ladybird wheelybug for his christening present. I didn't want to get a religious gift particularly but wanted something he would use and would be robust.

He loved it for a couple of years or so and actually my friend offered to gave us it back last year to pass on to my nephew as it was still is such good condition. He now loves it too.

I got my nephews (not godsons but close enough) something related to their names. In each case I looked up his name -- as it happened, they both have (rather obscure) saints names, so I bought each an antique print of the animal most closely associated with the saint of his name.

When the time came, my brother and SIL bought my daughter, who has a Shakespearian name, a lovely edition of the play her name comes from.

My other brother typically gives beautifully bound collections of traditional fairy tales.

I got my goddaughter a bespoke book stamp from these people www.bloomfieldandrolfe.com I got them to customise it with little details about her life - ie the place she was born, interests of the family etc. Future gifts from me will be books, which her parents and her can stamp. I'd like books to be the "thing" I give her.

I should have asked here long ago and avoided weeks of awkward not knowing whats appropriate and failing to decide!
