Pants at night

I know this might sound like a really silly question, but I few things I've read on MN over the years have made me think about this.

Should kids (more particularly girls) wear pants at night under their pyjamas?

The thing is, I always do. But I've read a lot on MN about people thinking that's weird and that just pj's are fine. DD has very recently started being dry at night so I've put pants on her instead of pull ups but then this thought struck me. What do other people think?

my son normally wears pants at night under his jim jams. Sometimes he doesn't and giggles because it's tickly.
I don't normally. but then I don't wear anything!!!!!!!!!

My kids always wear pants.

EmmaGellerGreen · 23/04/2015 10:36

DS doesn't. He did forget to take them off at a Beavers sleepover and apparently woke up in the middle of the night to remove them because he was uncomfortable (and woke up everyone else in the process).

No, why would you?

I have read that night time dryness can be helped by going bare- if they wear pants they still have the sensation of wearing a nappy, if you see what I mean.

I can't think of a good reason why you'd wear pants at night?

MaebyF · 23/04/2015 10:51

I don't think there is a good reason, just habit - I've always worn them so I couldn't not wear them now, it would feel far too unusual!

No pants here.

CatsCantTwerk · 23/04/2015 10:56

I wear pants and so do my dc. Surely you would have to wash your PJ's every day if you go pant less?

Micah · 23/04/2015 10:58

I don't wear pj's ;)

Dd1 gets straight out the shower and into her pj's, so they last a few days. Dd2 prefers nighties.

Oreocrumbs · 23/04/2015 11:04

DD asked for pants for the first time this week wearing a nightie. She's never asked before when wearing pjs apparently it didn't feel right with nothing on under the nightie though. She isn't long out of pull ups and I did wonder if having pants on might make her think she had a one on and have an accident but she got up as normal to use the loo.

MaebyF · 23/04/2015 14:10

See, that's what I was thinking, Cats. Probably wrong though.

Pants at night is odd.

youngestisapyscho · 23/04/2015 14:32

I wear undies with my PJ's.. feels weird not too... DDs don't under PJs but DD12 does with a nightie... she feels 'bare' without them, or she puts PJ shorts on instead.

mindexplode · 23/04/2015 14:39

I sometimes do, sometimes don't depending on many factors (including time of the month/how short my nightie is etc)

DS 1&2 don't becuase we went from pull ups to PJ bottoms, each set of PJ gets worn two nights and I don't think it's a bad thing. Between the two of them I had 3 wet nights in total when training at night so it worked for us.

MaebyF · 23/04/2015 14:45

She's gone dry at night herself without any training, which has been a pleasant surprise, so I don't think she's confused by pants and pull ups. Benefit of training late at gone 3, her language skills are there not because I'm a lazy arse and never got around to potty training before then, oh no

We wear pants to bed, I sleep in just knickers and a vest top
Son has pants on under pjs, clean on before bed and fresh ones on again in the morning, I've never really thought about it, just habit I guess.
My daughter will wear them too. X

kimistayingalive · 26/04/2015 00:31

My son age 4 wears undies at bed. Mainly due to progression of pull ups to no pull ups and it's more hygienic on his pj's.
My husband sometimes wears his boxers to bed if not lounge pants too. Otherwise he's naked.
I vary. Mainly due to comfort and hygiene but usually because it's easier and nicer being naked and I can throw something on when I need to.
Anyway back on topic. Undies under pj's or nighties is fine especially when young. They'll decide whether to continue or bare all themselves when they are older. Don't worry about it.

pointythings · 26/04/2015 18:01

I don't think there's right or wrong, just what you're comfortable with. DDs never wore pants under PJs but did under nighties, these days they both sleep naked (unless DD1 is on her period, in which case she obviously wears pants). We are a household of naked sleepers, except for DH.

happygirl87 · 26/04/2015 18:04

This totally divides MN Grin FWIW I don't, never have!

FromAtoZ · 26/04/2015 21:44

My DS's sleep in just there boxer shorts, but on hot nights nothing.

DD1 she is 5 still wears nighttime pyjama pants so she just wears that and sometimes a vest. But I suspect she will be a pants wearer but when hot nothing.

Both DH and I sleep naked and always have done.

DD2 is only 10weeks so wears a nappy and a vest.

QuinionsRainbow · 27/04/2015 10:58

No pants under nighties/PJs when my sister and I were kids, both Mum and Gran being firmly of the traditional opinion that it was healthier to "air out", but we were encouraged to wear our vests, until we stopped wearing them altogether soon after I started school. DCs never wore pants under PJs, and insistently refused PJs once they got realised that DH and I didn't wear them.

RatOnnaStick · 27/04/2015 11:03

DS1 does because he prefers it, DH and I sleep naked mostly so we've never pressured him either way.

mousmous · 27/04/2015 11:09

whatever feels right for you.
we all wear pants at night.
no problems with trush and it saves on washing as pj's/bedding can be washed less often because of it.
