Spanish passport

Hello,
My partner keeps pressing for our kids to get a Spanish passport, on top of having UK passports already. I do not see any advantages, at least, to my knowledge of applying for a Spanish one. Does someone know, if there are any advantages, including financial ones, for him individually, as a Spanish citizen, if children obtain the document. Btw : he has already registered them in the Family book.

Because the UK is in the EU, there's isn't really any additional financial benefit to having the two passports in terms of access to European jobs, university education, etc.; however, Spanish citizens are entitled to vote in Spanish elections, regardless of whether or not they have ever lived in Spain (this could change at some point, though). If (gods forbid) the UK leaves the EU, then damn, yes, get that passport and get it fast.

As compulsory military service was done away over a decade ago, there's no danger of being drafted for a year once your children turn 18.

As the kids are already in the Libro de familia, they should be able to apply for a Spanish passport should they ever want one. The difficulty is that Spain only allows dual citizenship with countries that were former colonies. As the Armada failed, the UK definitely does not qualify. As a Canadian with a Spanish husband, our kids would be granted Canadian and Spanish citizenship, but would have to decide which to keep on their 18th birthdays. There are ways around this, but it involves pleading your case to the local consulate.

Thank you, "pulpi". It is useful to know what to expect under different scenarios.
