In people's experience is there an age after which this technique doesnt really work? I think I've read threads on here about older babies finding this more upsetting than younger babies.
Considering trying it with DS2 for naps to get him to sleep in his cot instead of only in sling/on me. He's 5mo

Have you tried other methods like reading the No Cry Sleep Solution? If you are worried about upsetting your lo, it might be worth a read. Also, have a look at this website. It's aimed at parents who wish to make informed choices about their dc and sleep Smile

I tried it but it really didn't work for mine - I think because until then I had always fed him to sleep and so picking him up but not feeding him just confused him and distressed him more. I'm guessing it might work better for yours if he's used to sleeping on you without being fed to sleep. We did controlled crying in the end which worked much better, though I realise it's not right for everyone.

Yes it used to work for me, no longer.

I can jiggle/rock dd to sleep but only if she's not hungry at all. She likes boob then a rock.

Jilted I have the no cry nap solution and giving it a re-read. I am def wary of not giving him a massive shock by suddenly deciding he can't sleep on me. Ideally I'd feed him to sleep then transfer to cot which I did with all my DS1's naps til he was well over 15mo. DS2 though has a very sensitive tilt monitor. The moment I move him geeeeeeeently away from me..... BEEP BEEP BEEP!! Alarm triggers and eyes pop open..... "You're not thinking of PUTTING ME DOWN are you mummy??!!"

Grin at "very sensitive tilt monitor". My DC1 had one of those. I do believe its a manufacturing fault and you can take them back for a refund.
