I've been reading lots of articles on ahaparenting.com (only found out about it on mn) and have started reading Calm Parents, Happy Kids by Laura Markham. A lot of it makes sense to me and I'm going to try to implement as much as I can with my feisty 2 year old. It's only early days but it does seem to be working (certainly better than my angry mum routine). I am just really interested to know if anyone has had long term success with this approach? I've seen some people write it off as rubbish, especially elements like her views on punishments/time outs and I wondered if it was just opinion, or have some tried and failed with this approach and found a more disciplinarian way more successful?

I've been reading her stuff for a few years now, and it really resonates with how I instinctively want to be as a parent. With my five y.o. I did try timeouts at first because I thought you HAD to, but it was horrible. He must have been about 2 then. Now both he and 2 y.o. dd are generally peaceful, co operative , pleasant children (imvho)

I saw her talking at a conference a few years ago and was impressed. I read her articles on her page. I try to do the things that she suggests about empathising with my little boy (as we're just getting into toddler territory and he's starting to get frustrated).
