hi does anyone know if the ice is still used by emergency services? do people still have it in their phone, how about if phone has screen lock? just seen a seatbelt cover with kids ice details called icebelt wondering if I should buy it, i have a tag for my son who is diabetic but it doesn't have next of kin on it, this ice seatbelt pad does, how would ambulances know my son was diabetic if I had a crash or who to contact if I was out cold? any thoughts?

to be honest I've never heard any of my colleagues using it. Old fashioned wallets etc seem to be their first choice for id. I know there have been occasions when they've tried to access a phone but it's been locked.

I've got my mum & brothers details on a card in my purse

I probsbly only carry my purse about half the times I leave the house.

My contact list has the name followed by ice, for my two ice contacts. I do know though that before mobile phones police knocked on my door to alert me that my nok was serverly injured and in hospital - they did this very quickly

The other thing is ofcourse if you're very seriously injured police won't phone your nok they'll call to see them in person. If it's a serious injury priority is given to contacting nok so different officers will be despatched to do that

After speaking with my friends dh who is a policeman he says, they check reg no then car insurance and then computer database for home address before phone as it could be pin locked. He says get the seatbelt or have a bracelet with the info on that he has to wear as paramedics always check for medical info on a person.

cathpip · 19/02/2015 07:46

A friends policeman dh says they check car reg and insurance against their database to retrieve all your details and anyone else listed on car insurance and address will also come up. They don't automatically check phone as it could be pin locked. He says get the seat belt thing or use a medical bracelet as paramedics will check for medical identification first.

Soup dragon... How will they look in the contact list if the phone is locked? How will they know Lionel is your husband if you haven't saved him as Lionel ice?

Perhaps they don't then from what pp has said but it sounds much easier to have an easily accessible ice than calling someone to check a database, who then despatches someone to the address. Agree if nok has died you'd want a visit over a phone call but not for an injury.

on my phone I have DP and an old chum listed as ICE Anastasia and ICE Roland (or whatever) which I have put as shortcuts on the front screen, as well as in the directory.

Interesting point about car insurance as we are on each other's cars.

Some years ago I had a bad accident and they kept asking name, dob, nok and I told them but said I didn't want to worry her. Eventually they thought I would peg out so sent police round.

SoupDragon · 20/02/2015 07:08

TallulahTwinkletoes How will they look in the contact list if the phone is locked?

The same way they would access Siri of course. By magic or knowing your passcode.

Minisoksmakehardwork · 20/02/2015 07:24

On the latest iPhone update, if you swipe left on a locked phone and tap the emergency word, it comes up with emergency info (provided you've saved it) including contact numbers and their relationship, details of your allergies, even blood type if you know it. But I don't think that's any substitute for having medical id on your person if you have a known condition which people might need to know about.

TallulahTwinkletoes · 20/02/2015 19:09

I never knew you could get into contacts while locked. It really is magic Grin
