Dutch speakers in midlands?

Hi,
I'm Belgian (Flemish) and live in midlands with my English dh. I speak Dutch to my 2 little ones, so they're bilinual. It would be nice for them to hear Dutch from other people as well as me, our au pair and Disney. And I'd enjoy hearing about other Dutch speakers' experiences in England.

Only just at the beginner stage - ahhhh it's hard for me...but I'll try so I can say hello to people - and communicate the basics.

Good job your little ones are bi-lingual. It's so important.

Happy to hear that you're learning Flemish while living in Belgium. It is always nice if someone makes an effort, even though most people probably know English. Had to laugh though, because Flemish is Vlaams not Vlamingen. The latter is the people!

I'm used to making loads of stupid mistakes though - lol ..... but at least the locals correct me and I try not to forget for next time.... though my pea brain means that I get in wrong a few times!!

Wish I was. DS is half Dutch. I split with his dad about 7 years ago but I'd always hoped he'd learn Dutch. Ik spraak een klein betje Nederlands, but sadly not enough to teach him. His father moved back to Holland & had a son, so ds has a half-brother he can barely communicate with. I know eventually he'll learn English but I'd like ds to be able to speak to him in Dutch. His dad always spoke to him in English when he was little because he said it felt strange talking to him in Dutch. I think he was in the habit of speaking to almost everyone in English while he lived here so it was hard to make an exception. I only learnt basic Dutch from language books since he only spoke to me in English. I'm trying to find a way for ds to learn & I would love to finish learning the language myself.

Weet niet of iemand dit berichtje leest maar ik woon in Oxford alweer 7 jaar. DH is Engels en DD(25 maanden) en DS (5 in september) beide begrijpen Nederlands, spreken gaat nog een beetje stroef maar denk dat dat komnt omdat ik niet consequent Ndls tegen ze spreek. DS begint in oktober met de Ndlse zaterdag school in Oxford wat denk ik wel een grote invloed zal hebben

Hi Elka, am sure there are some Dutch speakers in the Midlands.

I am Dutch and DP is English, we have dd (2.9m - trying to raise bilingual but I've noticed English is coming out on top at the moment) and next one on the way, but we live in Watford so a bit too far for you.

Pickie - wij wonen in Belgie en mijn kinderen leren nederlands en engels. Maar het is moeilijk als zij meer vlaams horen, en nu meer vlaams spreken dan engels. En soms de twee samen bvb:

'ik like dat'!

maar het is wel de moeite waarde om twee twalig te worden als kind. Ik was 25 jaar toen ik nederlands begon te leren en ik kan nog altijd niet goed praten in het nederlands.

Mijn vader is een halve Belg! Heeft zelfs nog in het Belgische legre gediend!

Mijn oudste mixt de twee talen ook. Ben de laatste twee weken erg consequent Ndls aan het spreken en het is ongelofelijk hoe snel ze het oppikken! Lastig om consequent te zijn want mijn DH is op het moment thuis en hij spreekt weinig tot geen Ndls maar ga het deze keer wel volhouden.

Mocht er iemand in de buurt wonen laat het even weten!

Mijn man is een half nederlands en wij willen onze zonetje nederlands te leren, maar het is moelijk omdat ik alleen maar een beetje nederlands kunen praten. DS (2) kan een nederlands word zeggen - "kijk" .

Goh, ik dacht even dat iemand anders ook Nederlandstaligen in de Midlans zocht. Maar het was mijn eigen oude thread die heropgenomen was! Mijn 2 kinderen mengen Engels en Nederlands. Ik maakte mij daar vroeger vreselijk veel zorgen om tot ik het boek 'Growing up with 2 languages' gelezen had (de auteurs zijn man en vrouw, de namen ontsnappen mij nu). Blijkt dat de overgrote meerderheid van de kinderen mengen, of je nu consequent 1 taal spreekt (zoal ik) of niet en dat het niet echt een teken is dat ze de minderheidstaal niet beheersen, gewoon dat ze mengen makkelijker vinden. Het boek is echt op ouders gericht i.p.v. taalkundigen of leraars en is fantastisch.

I'm sure you'll be thinking , this is the slowest answer to a thread EVER, but I'm in walsall UrbanDevil.
I hear the odd bit of Dutch when walking around Walsall/Birmingham, but I never actually met a Dutch person/Belgian since I've lived here and I know there must be, hence my thread!
