Nappy rash - help!!

munz · 21/10/2006 18:26

what can be done about it? it seems to be getting worse at the minute - it doesn't particually seem to be hurting the boy but his poor bum is getting red raw

we're using differnt wipes - the tesco's own - wondering if they could be making/causing it, also he's dribbling well which suggests teething - coupled with off his food so not sure which is the cause.

anyhow he's going to bed with vasaline on his bum tonight - each bum change he has the nappy rash cream from tescos on tthere, and has also had half hour of freestylin tonight.

do u just let it run th course or do u have nay fool proof ways to clear it up? his first two teeth were fine - biut of screaming but no rash/hardly and dribbling.

ta.

Try using water instead of wipes (cut up some old towel for the sticky stuff). Dry his bum thoroughly with a soft cloth. Barrier cream as well until it clears up.

At least then you'll know pretty quick whether or not it's the wipes that are causing it.

Good luck!

I use washable wipes with just water, but when my boys get nappy rash, I swear by camomile tea. Got the hint from a cloth nappy website. Make up a cup of it, let it cool (obviously!!) then use as a final wipe after cleaning bum with just water. Dip a cloth wipe, you could use a facecloth or I beleive bounty kitchen roll could do as wipes as it doesn't disintegrate. If you don't redip the wipes the cup will do for several nappy changes. Also you can soak a nappy liner (or sheet of bounty if you don't use washable nappies) and leave that inside the nappy next to the skin. Once when rash was very bad I put a teaspoon of honey (natural antibiotic) in when I made the camomile. I know it sounds strange but it really works. Also for a barrier cream I just use bog standard boots zinc and castor oil cream. Hope it clears up soon!

is it his top 2 teeth coming through? my dd1 had absolutely terrible nappy rash with those but was totally fine with the bottom 2 (well just grizzly), got to the point where it nearly started to bleed. broke my heart! anyway, here is what i would do:

  1. stop using wipes - back to cotton wool and water & use metanium cream on it (boots) brilliant stuff
  2. if it doesn't start to clear up quickly take the nappy off for as much of the day as possible. air to the bum cleared it up quicker than anything else. Good luck! hope it doesn't get too bad.

My dd suffers terribly and the only thing that will soothe it and acts as a barrier is zinc and castor oil cream, fab stuff

munz · 21/10/2006 19:42

will deffo get some of that, how about the pink stuff camomile lotion - any good?

twicker - did u put anything on the floor whilst freestyling? - I took the nappy off but did the poppers up on his vest - guess that defeats the point thou??

Do you mean calomine lotion? MThat is pink. My mum used to use it on me when I sunburnt, it is very soothing and cooling, but dries to a flaky powdery effect and is quite sticky while its drying so I'm not sure how that would do, might stick him to his nappy..!

flibbertyjibbet · 21/10/2006 19:56

Oh and when my boys are having nappy free time, I lie them on their changing mat with a flat nappy or old towell sort of under them and then loosely over their groin otherwise my whole house would be coverd in wee... I change the towell or end nappy free time as soon as they wee. I think nappy free time is much easier with girls!

Dd2 has suffered from terrible nappy rash on and off. It goes bright red and often bleeds. She usually gets it just before a new tooth is about to make an appearance. The only thing that gets rid of it is Metanium. Its very thick and creates a good barrier. I also put tea tree oil and lavender oil in the bath. A good soak normally helps to reduce the redness.

Our HV advised us against using cotton wool as the fibres can shred and irritate the rash.

Hope your ds's bum is better soon.

flibbertyjibbet · 21/10/2006 21:02

Belo, what how much tea tree oil and lavender do you put in the bath? Might try that one next time.

Belo · 22/10/2006 09:06

just 3 drops of each. also makes the bathroom smell nice

twickersmum · 22/10/2006 11:36

with the nappy off, i just used those pampers bed mats on the floor as they absorb everything!
I also sat her in her bumbo chair as they totally wipe clean (great for poo...) and you can even put them in the dishwasher (well i do, not sure if you are supposed to!)

munz · 22/10/2006 16:42

urghhh! he;'s just pooped everywhere damn nappy freestyin! DH bathing him and he cryed out using cotton wool today but it seems to be getting worse

Munz - sorry to hear about the rash, hope it clears up soon. DS has a bit of a red bum but no rash as such - teething is horrible! Luckily DS hasn't ever pooped without nappy on though; he's very predictable and poops right after a feed so I wait for that then leave his nappy off and all I need to wipe up is pee!

twickers - I'm assuming that it's the Bumbo you put in the dishwasher and not your DD!

whooOOOoooOOOpsfallenoveragain · 22/10/2006 20:10

I used to find that egg white really helped when dd had bad nappy rash

munz · 22/10/2006 20:30

as - normally he just poos after a feed as well - but for the past 2 days he's not eaten a right lot/gone off meals he'd normally gulp down, apart form ready brek for breakfast. and has been a little poo machine! lol.

Just been to the baby show and picked up this great product called Ocean Pure, it is a natural seawater spray for cleaning babies bums up. Been using it for 2 days now and nappy rash has virtually gone. The flyer said it is also available from www.oceanpure.co.uk good luck with DS's bum

munz · 24/10/2006 09:07

thanks incy - seems (touch wood) to be getting better v slightly so fingers crossed, had anther pee on the carpet yesterday - i'm so paranoid about my house smelling of pee now.

does the rash only come when the teeth are aboutt o break thru? things seem to have calmed down a biot for the mo so just wondering.

Munz munz munz - go to chemist, get metanium - apply at every nappy change - will be gone in 24hrs.

becky has had red raw bum on and off for months now - and still only has the 1 tooth she got 4 months ago!!!

munz · 24/10/2006 10:01

so that would be a no then jarm! lol.

OP posts:
MKS · 26/10/2006 11:09

I'll say the same for metanium - but dab it on really thinly don't smear it as it is slightly abrasive. It was the only thing that worked for DD1 who was raw and bleeding if left in a poo for more than 5 minutes
