Dd coughing at night

My dd is just getting over a cold, she's fine during the day but nighttime she's coughing a lot. Apart from giving her calpol and bringing her in our bed so we can prop her up high with pillows is there any other things I can do, she's getting so frustrated as she wants to sleep but is struggling.

try rubbing vicks or equivalent on her throat and chest...

My two seem to have a similar cough. I've been putting a wet flannel with a few drops of olbas oil on it, on the radiator in their rooms. It seems to be helping. Also gave DD an extra pillow, and when she stays on it not buried between the two it seems to help.

Prop up her bed e.g. something under the legs of her cot/bed?

Rub Vicks liberally on her feet and cover with socks. Not sure why it works but I find it does!

Try Vicks on the soles of her feet then putting socks over it. Also having the window open a fraction until she falls asleep.
DD had a cough which kept her up at night for 4 weeks. It only cleared up after a course of antibiotics.

She's 12 months so not sure if she can have a pillow which is why if she has a coughing fit I've been bringing her in with us. Can you use Vicks on a baby this age?? Great idea with the wet flannel, may have to try this

you can get a snuffle babies for younger ones. read the package, ax long ax it doesn't contain camphor (sp?) it's fine to use.

catzpyjamas · 05/02/2015 21:36

Aahh, too young for Vicks until 2 years old. What about a humidifier (or bowl of water on radiator). Baby olbas in the water or on a cloth near her bed might help too.

bambinibop · 05/02/2015 21:36

Mine is the same age and has this at the moment where coughing is bad a night. She was up coughing at about 4.30 last night and couldn't go back to sleep Sad I tried snuffle babe's but think it was too late as she'd got upset. I've put it on before bed tonight! We also gave nurofen to ease any pain. It's hard though hope your dd is feeling better soon

Put a pillow under the head end of the mattress. It should prop her up without smothering her or leaving a big gap in the bed.

DS coughed at night for so long that the gp prescribed an inhaler, which knocked the coughing on the head immediately.

Thanx everyone. We had a better night last night. If she carrys online this nxt week then I think I'll try and get a doc appointment for her just in case. Will try the water on a radiator trick though
