How much water do you give your baby?

DS is 5 months and we are starting to give boiled cooled water as an option once a day as he is FF. He's keen to drink a couple of ounces and still maintains a good formula intake.

I wondered whether this was the norm - how much, if any, water do you give your baby?

I didnt give any until i started solids and offered it alongside food (both mine were formula fed). There isn't really a need for it when they are solely on milk unless it is really hot or they are constipated.

Formula is mostly water anyway so this is not necessary.

I started offering water in a sippy cup with meals when I started weaning and now throughout the day also.

Thanks for the feedback. He's been finding it very uncomfortable to poo a couple of times lately although consistency is fine (sorry TMI) so thought a little water would help. Will stop until weaning.

I only offered a sippy cup with meals.

If hes a bit uncomfortable with bm then give a bit of water as it may help. My two were ff and if they had bm problems I would offer water, or if they were feeling poorly and off their bottles I gave water. I started offering water in a sippy cup when weaning with each meal.

As others have said, generally only from weaning. Though in very hot weather you might want to give water.

A few sips with each meal and offered regularly throughout the day (12mo).

I give my ff baby (3.5 mo) a sterilized egg cup full of boiled water if she seems to be having difficulty with bm, or if she is having a fussy day and I don't feel she has drunk enough milk - sometimes she is happy to have a little water when she won't touch her milk. I really don't see that there can be any problem with what you are doing OP, so long as you aren't offering the water at a time when it might affect how much formula your DS drinks. I think some babies just need a little more liquid, as do some adults - I'm always thirsty!
