Something bothering my 4 year old. How do I find out what?

He's lashed out at me, dh and his baby brother in the last couple of days. For tiny things. For instance his brother took his tissue this evening and he got overly angry and almost head butted him. He hit his dad before that when he mentioned bedtime.
His teacher also mentioned that he scratched a boy in an argument over a toy.
I've tried asking him what's wrong but he won't listen or runs away and hides. It's upsetting me as he's normally a lovely kind little boy and he knows how to behave.
I asked him about school and he told me he hot the boy but it was an accident. He knows it wrong so I can't understand why he did it and I don't know how to deal with it as it's never been an issue before.
Can someone tell me what I should say to him to help him figure it out in his own head or to tell me if there's something he's not told us?

Perhaps his Teacher over reacted and really told him off for the incident and now he is a bit disturbed. His Teacher didn't say he was scratching someone and being aggressive every day, did she? That would be worrying.

Your son may well have scratched the other child in self defence.
My beautiful DGS started spitting when he went to school.

School is stressful place and he is only tiny. Lots of cuddles and reassurance that you love him are needed and then I am sure he will be OK.

Unfortunately you can't protect your children from all the knocks and set backs in life.

Maybe try a few days of calm cuddles (or full-on love bombing). He may not have the words or understanding to articulate how he is feeling, or the cause of those feelings, but feeling loved unconditionally may trigger some interesting comments from him that give you an idea about what's happening.
