How do people afford it once kids start school. Has anyone got any tips to avoid these horrendous mark ups!!

Don't be a teacher, you have the horror of these prices even pre kids and you don't have the option to say sod it I'll pay the fine it's cheaper than the crazy mark up. Can you tell the silly prices annoy me.

Bedsheets4knickers · 11/01/2015 21:54

Yes :-( it's not fair. We should all avoid it for 12 months and kick them where it hurts

Stay in the uk, go camping, haven etc. we haven't been abroad for a few years, its just too expensive.

Yes we did a haven in Cornwall , blessed with 7 days of gorgeous weather . It's just so hit and miss in this country

I looked at Haven for this August compared to Majorca. Prices weren't dissimilar.

TooSpotty · 11/01/2015 22:06

We drive to the continent so save on airfares, and get the Eurotunnel which is quicker and often cheaper than the ferry.

We self cater. End of August can be cheaper as many other countries are back at school then (including Scotland of course). Also places like Centreparcs in other countries have much lower mark ups in the summer than the UK versions as it's common in other countries for schools to stagger holiday times. Try to stay away from UK companies as much as you can as they're the ones adding the massive mark ups.

RedCrayons · 11/01/2015 22:14

There's usually some good discount codes around for Haven. Think I got 40% off for July last year. Mse forums are usually a good place to start.

We live close to the coast so can have a day at the beach when it's nice.

I do really miss going on 'proper holiday' though. I'd love to spend 2 weeks lying on the beach somewhere hot!

Just nearly booked a week at haven £436 I'm happy beyond belief in Cornwall . If it's dry. End of June.. So bloody tempted

RedCrayons · 11/01/2015 22:47

That's a good price. Is that the brochure price? June should be good

Bedsheets4knickers · 12/01/2015 15:22

We've ended up booking a cottage on lizard point . £618 for 7 days the views look amazing . We've also said if it dogs it down all week we'l book the disgustingly over priced abroad holiday and whack it on a credit card. Going with the only live once motto :-)
