baby eczema - help

Hello everyone xx and happy new year

So my 5.5 month old has eczema as it's stressing me out, it's all over her back and chest and tummy.... she has had it about 6 weeks. I have been told by the doc it might be the formula that i have been giving her in the evening. I had been giving her formula in the evening as my breast milk supply gets low then and she just used to fall straight asleep after a 210 ml gulp of aptimal (she loved it, really needs that hit). Now she is exclusively breast fed again and the eczema is getting better slowly, but she is hungry!

Has anyone had this problem with eczema and formula... did you find a solution? I guess early weaning might be an option here?

You do have milk to give - it is just that your supply isn't as fast in the evenings. Plus, baby likes to feed for comfort as well as for food. This is normal. As she gets older she won't feed for as long.

Also if you wean early you need to be careful of food you give as she may also react to it e.g. dairy foods.

Ask your health visitor or gp for a referral, my dd has mild eczema and we had a really good appointment with a skin specialist. It also means we get all of her lotions and potions on prescription, don't let it stress you out. Sorry I know this doesn't answer your question about the relationship between formula and eczema.

Try baby probiotics - you just mix them with formula - scientific studies have shown they help eczema.

My ds had eczema at this age and saw hv and gp, noone ever mentioned it could be from formula milk, was just one of v those things that babies can get. Used oilatum in his bath and aqueous cream and Vaseline around face and neck to seal skin for nighttime dribbles x

Have you been given cream etc? It is trial and error to find what is best for your baby. I thought oilatum wasn't amazing. We have cetraben for frequent application several times a day plus v.greasy hydromol for washing and night time. Mild steroid cream (hydrocortisone) for flare ups, use for a week or so. I found some GPs much better informed than others. One recommended Scratchsleeves (google) which stop DD scratching her face in her sleep.

No point feeling bad about possible causes

Hydromol in the bath and aveeno on skin.... cortisone cream for really bad flare ups.... all avail on prescription...... No perfumed lotions or baby oil. I buy aveeno body wash and use that as shampoo too

Finding out the underlying cause is important. For my DD it was milk allergy, she was affected by my breast milk til I went dairy free, then it improved massively.

Lush Dream Cream. None of the prescribed stuff made any difference to DS2's eczema. Dream Cream is like a magic potion.

Is she showing signs she's ready to have solids? Ie sitting up, lost tongue thrust reflex, showing interest in food?

I don't think 5.5 month would really count as early weaning.

Eczema isn't always food related. DD got it really badly about the same age and I found it was triggered by perfumes in bath products/creams and washing powder.

Try:

Double rinse all her clothes and bedding, and never use biological washing powder. Use non-bio for your own clothes and bedding as well.

No bath products, just warm water. Oilatum didn't help. Dentinox cradle cap shampoo was the only thing that didn't make her skin worse.

Aveeno cream is brilliant. It isn't marketed as a specific eczema product but it is the only cream that worked for dd. I slathered it on liberally first thing, last thing, after a bath, and every time I had her stripped down for a nappy change. After about a week her skin had improved to the point where she stopped scratching. I tried all the regular eczema creams first, and they made no difference at all.

Bathing is really drying so not more than once every 3 days. A morning and night top and tail is fine at that age.

Aveeno is working for my LO. As is aptimil pepti for milk allergy. We use weleeda baby wash, no other products. Use fairy non bio, no fabric softener. I also cut out eggs and dairy while breastfeeding- he has allergies and eczema flared up when I ate these. Central heating doesn't help- we try to keep cups of water in bedroom to make the air a bit moister.

Scratch sleeves are a godsend.

It's awful, my LO is scarred from all his scratching. Good luck x

We were up the doctors more times than I can count with DDs (chronic) eczema, which started about 3 months. It was a matter of trial & error to find the right cream. Dermal works for us and we still use it twice a day otherwise she has flare ups.

Its hereditary in our family, not food related.

Be careful when weaning as eczema babies can be more prone to food allergies, such as eggs etc.

The key to keeping on top of eczema is finding the right cream and moisturising.

My son also has eczema which started at around 3 months. He's now 21 months. Dairy does make his skin flare up if he has too much, but it's pretty much under control now. I found it was made worse by prescription meds, not by his formula. We use La Roche Posay Lipikar Baume on him and it cleared up within days.

My lo had her first bottle of aptamil at 6 weeks & she then didn't poop for 3 weeks & developed eczema - I think it was the bottle but it could have been about to happen anyway. So I've been on a bit of a learning journey with this at the moment. I think the thing is to try different creams to see what works well on your lo's skin. I didn't find the oilatum in the bath any good - it made her skin worse. Same with vaseline & emulsyifying lotion, she reacts to them. Here's a few things I've found out & some things that work for me:

Bath every day - the only thing I put in is a 'syrup' that I make up by soaking porridge oats & squeezing them through a muslin square - I always notice a difference & this is supposed to help with the itching.

I try to layer creams - I found coconut oil ok - but its easy to put on. I also use elave lotion, acqueous cream & mostly soak her in silcocks base.

Try to moisturise at least 3 times a day (pain in the neck). And try to keep in the same babygrow (seems gross) - get baby thick with cream so that they almost feel wet - apparently this is so the skin is constantly getting moisture

Its awful to deal with - its so sad to see them scratching & have terrible skin plus its a good deal of work. I have cut dairy out of my diet & my baby's skin is def a great deal better.
