Did we start potty training too early !?!

Hi all,

DS is 26 mo and we are on our 2nd day of potty training... I know it's early days, but it isn't going so well...

DS puts up a fight everytime we want any him to sit on the potty.... he still isn't telling us when he wants a wee wee, so we are putting him on the potty every 30 mins... is that too often ? Should we persevere with the hope that it's going to get better... or did we start when he wasn't ready ?

Unless a child is showing signs of readiness - ie telling you they're doing a wee or poo then I wouldn't bother training

It does sound like he's not getting it, can he say wee or poo or potty? I started ds 29 months on Saturday, day one wad wee all over the floor but he would sit on the potty with no complaints and day two we had some wee in the potty. Day three we just had one accident.

Maybe give it another day and if he seems reluctant shelve it for a month or two xx

ruby I am not sure whether he knows when he is doing a wee...
he knows when he is doing a poo, but for some odd reason doesn't like to accept that he's doing one !

Once I have bribed him with a chocolate button, he does sit on the potty and does a wee...

what's odd is that in the evenings before his bath, he asks for the potty and wants to wee in it !! but during the day will put up a fight !

Will try another day and see how it goes

He's probably sick to death of the potty if you are sitting him on it every 30 minutes! No wonder he puts up a fight

I would leave him naked from the waist down and only put him on the potty if he needs to/is doing a wee. Lots of chocolate buttons. Give it a couple of days and if you still aren't making any progress leave it a couple of months.

He doesn't sound ready at all. Put it away for a few months and try again.
My DS was 2yrs 10 months when he got it.

He needs to be able to tell you before he needs it so you can get to the nearest toilet and get trousers and pants down in time.

We had a few false starts but ds got there in the end. Don't be afraid to shelve it for a while. When he got it, he got it very very quickly as he was (finally!) ready.

If he cant tell you he needs to go, and cant take his own clothes off and hasnt shown an interest in the potty/end of nappies then its too soon. I'm sure its possible to have a DS who is ready at 26 months but I'm certain its pretty rare. Why are you in such a rush to potty train your child?

Just after 2 seems the normal time to potty train where I am It's only on Mumsnet I read about people leaving children in nappies until they are 3+.

I also don't think you need to wait until they can tell you before they need to wee - they can pick that up pretty quickly while you potty train. At first just focus on getting them on the potty as soon as they start to wee and reward with a chocolate button, they soon get the idea of announcing a wee before they need it.

I think it sounds a bit early for your DS. My DD was 27 months when she decided to use the toilet and was fine night and day shortly thereafter, but all we did was leave a potty around and tell her she could wear pants if she used the toilet.

Once she did it herself we encouraged her and pressed on with it, but it was definitely instigated by her and was really easy and stress-free. She's super stubborn so I wouldn't have wanted to force the issue without some interest from her - it can very quickly become a power issue!

I would recommend backing off and wait until you can do lots of nudey time when it warms up a bit. But I'm sure people have success with a more direct method - it's just a bit higher risk!

thinkingaboutthis I know what you mean ! Where I come from, most children are potty trained by 2 if not earlier. My parents and in-laws are surprised that DS is still in nappies

Both me and my brother were trained by the time we were 1.5 yo!

What we have noticed is that every time DS puts up a fight to sit on the potty he doesn't do a wee. But when he does sit on it without making a fuss he does a wee.... maybe not making a fuss is his way of saying that he wants a wee

He didn't have any accidents since he got up from his afternoon nap and sat on his potty without a fuss after his dinner and just before bedtime and both times did a big wee

let's see how tomorrow goes
