Fight over a spoon

Now, I would like to know what you would have done in this case.
ds1. 3yo, on his chair is holding his spoon whist I dished the evening meal. He dropped his spoon on the floor and is waiting for me to pick it up. I said 'NO, go down your chair and pick it up oyourself'.
ds2, 17 months, was playing in the other room and came back in the kitchen, saw the spoon and... picked it up.
Ds1 started screaming 'It's MY spoon', ds2 didn't want to give it back (What a nice find ...)
Now I tried to exchange the spoon with ds2, didn't work, so finally took it away from him, gave it back to ds1. Put ds2 away for a few seconds so that he calmed down and went back to ds1 to explain that nothing would have happened if he HAD picked up his spoon.
Now, I am not sure that was the right thing to do. Afterall, ds2 found the spoon so in some ways he had the right to keep it.
What would you have done?

i would have put the spoon back in the drawer, no-one gets it if they fight over it

nailpolish · 12/10/2006 13:11

but, saying that, is such a grey area, spoon possession
