what do you do with your newborn all day?

My DD is coming up for 5 weeks and I'm worried I don't do enough with her during the day. She just tends to sleep in her carrycot most of the time. Should I be holding her and letting her sleep on me more? Or keeping her awake to play?

That's about right. If you want to hold, hold her. If not, just relax and enjoy the rest. The shit will no doubt hit the fan in a few weeks. If you are lonely, do some stuff otherwise just hunker down and get to know her.

Just enjoy it! You will never again have your first baby and it goes by in a flash. DC1 is now 18 but I still look back at those first few weeks of motherhood as one of the most special times in my life.

And if you're worried you're not doing enough, lie her on her playmat and shake some toys with her, take her out for a walk and enjoy all the, "oh! She's beautiful!" comments. Talk to her when she's awake, even if you feel silly.

It is your first time and your baby does sound very settled (lucky thing!) I used to take my little one out for long walks ~ it was nice to be out in the fresh air and great for feeling fit and well.
I took her to mother and baby groups to meet new friends who are still friends now, and baby musical class where I would sing to my hearts content and she would sit there wide eyed and as she got older she would join in. It depends how sociable you are, if you like staying at home ~ enjoy being at home, if you are an outdoorsy type like me go on your own adventures together. Be happy you have it all so sussed that you have time to reflect and enjoy the time!

I wish mine would have slept in the carrycot a bit more. My DD (8 weeks) prefers to sleep in my arms/ being carried so my back killing me and v hard to get anything done. Babies do sleep a lot so enjoy it. Watch her little twitching face, or homes under the hammer and drink tea. You don't really need to do anything with your newborn other than speak nonsense to them for the short window they are awake.

I went to a few groups when my DD was a newborn, but mostly I watched box sets, fed her and had cuddles. Occasionally, like a PP suggested, I put her on the mat and shook a toy at her to feel like I was aiding her development, but to be honest she screamed at me every time she had the slightest inkling I might put her down even for a second. Enjoy your snuggly newborn cuddles! Mine's too busy now trying to dismantle my house to cuddle much, I miss them!
