Sippy cups

LO is 12 months and still using the Tommee Tippee first sippy cup. Is this ok or should I be getting her a new one like the ones with a straw, etc?

I say whatever works. Give dc both and see which he likes. (sorry on phone, can't remember if you have a dd or ds) My ds is 4 and still has a sippy cup of milk before bed, he started when he was 12 months when he weaned off bottle.

I wouldn't have thought it made that much difference, I have a feeling the stages of sippy cups were only introduced to get people to buy more of them, suggest obsoletion kind of thing.

My lb still has a sippy cup for his milk every morning/evening. He uses a tommee tippee 12m+ non spill cup for juice. Took him a while to realise he had to really suck to get the juice out. But he's fine with it now. He's 2.5.

My 2&3 y olds still have the Tommee Tippee sippy cups. They have a tendency to spill their drinks and knock them over and I got fed up of cleaning them up. They can, and do drink out of open cups - I often give them the dregs of my tea/water/hor chocolate from my cup, they drink out of cups when we go to a cafe and they have cups at nursery. I wouldn't worry tbh. Just do what works.

They have these - ds has one without the handles. They're also good because they're thin and don't have a lip around the rim so can be used without the lids if you want.

I would just carry on with the TT cup and remove the lid when they get to an age where they have some control. Both DSes have done this and we just use a sports cup with a twist up nozzle when I have to carry a drink out and about.

Pretty much every single other sippy cup I've ever bought has leaked. They are all shit really.

Was talking to a dental nurse at the children's centre the other day about this. Apparently, the ranking is as follows (best to worst):
Doidy cup (or any lidless cup or beaker).
Free flow lidded cup.
Valved lidded cup.
Bottle.

I imagine a cup with a straw is somewhere between a valved cup and a free flow.

11 month old dc switches between a tommy tippee cup without a lid and a beaker with a spout. Tend to use the tommy tippee though. She manages remarkably well when she's in the right mood

My dd has never used the sippy cups, I have a cupboard full of various types and the moose hates them all!! normal plastic beaker with no lid or a nuby one with a straw are the only things she will drink out of. my hv went nuts that we weren't using a sippy cup, she basically got told to sod off out of my house for this and other stunningly idiotic comments

if your dd is happy then keep using it

If you have found a sippy cup your child will use then stick with it I say. My 20month old has managed to prove how the "truly non spill" is a load of rubbish!
Nuby: just have to shake upside down
Avent: drop hard enough and it will unscrew,
Tommiee tippiee: Shake vigorously

So at the moment it's whichever one leaks less, currently tommiee tippiee

Its still a basic free flow cup, just has bigger holes so water flows easier.

I asked the dentist about this when I took my ds when he was 2 for his first dental check. She said bottles obviously bad, but sippy cups are fine unless you find them pulling their top teeth forward with the spout, if that makes sense.

I seem to remember for adults that straws were good, especially for fizzy or acidic drinks, as it takes the fluid directly to the back of the mouth without bathing the teeth?
