Is this weird? Or just someone being nice?

Hi.

Today I was in my local tesco with my 2 1/2 year old daughter, when I got chatting to an old lady who asked how old she was so I told her. Then she said she had a brand new tea set at her house and wanted to get rid of (was for her grandson last year but got him something else) so once I finished in tesco I popped over and she gave me the toy and I said thank you and is she sure and doesn't want any money for it. She said no just glad for it to be gone and glad it will get some use. So I told my OH and he said it was weird. I just think it's just someone being nice?

It probably sounded unusual to your DH which is a shame there are lots of acts of random kindness out there

perhaps your DD could do her a card, with handprints or something like that.

How is that odd? Lady sees your DD, something makes her remember that tea set she has, so she thinks she'll do a good deed and pass it over. It's a lovely gesture.

I agree, now you know her address I would get your DD to help you make a card and send it to her. People love that. My parents left some old garden planters out of their front drive recently for people to take, my mum was incredibly made up when someone sent them a card with a photo of the planter that they had repainted and put in their garden.

That's lovely I would also be in the camp of sending a thank you card, why not stretch to chocolates !

It's a lovely thing to do. Do make sure to acknowledge it in some way (I know you've already thanked her), maybe some flowers?

I am rather shocked that your OH would think it "weird". Sorry state of affairs when an old lady can't do a random act of kindness without being labelled strange. .

She sounds lovely. A nice thank you card would definitely be appropriate.

I was in child's the other day asking if they had any reins for my dd-come-bolter and they didn't, the lady behind me at the till said she did at home as would happily give them to me! She said she was in my area the next day so I gave her my address and she popped over, I invited her and her dd (only slightly older than mine) in for a cuppa, she's lovely, we are going to hers next week for a play date.. I agree with ^^ your dps weird not the lady!!

Well I thought it was lovely too. And I've said I will get DD to do her a card and get a box of chocs. I said to him that she was just being nice and it's just the world we live in now that people don't usually do nice things like that anymore so maybe that's why I don't know. Thanks for all your comments glad no one else thinks it's strange. X

I'd take a picture of dd playing with it and pop that in a card. It would make the ladies' day for sure.

She is just being nice. People are so scared of everything these days they dot stop to think it could just be an old lady wanting to be kind.

Have your dd draw her a thank you card. Will probably make her day. (Im sure you have already done this, not meaning to tell you what to do, just know how nice a hand made card is).

You never know she might not be lucky enough to see her family very often and to give joy to your dd might have made her day or like I said she might just have simply done a nice thing.

When I read things like this it makes the world seem more balanced from all the bad we read in the papers.

Wow what a fantastic present OP. My kids would have loved that.

Her son/daughter might be like my sister who's a pretentious cow and refuses to take some of the presents my mum buys her children. My mum always ends up buying them something else to keep her happy and then doesn't know what to do with the unwanted item.
