Baby too long for pram

My 7 week old DD is a very long baby (the midwives were really surprised), and as of today only has 5cm left above her head in the pram when she lies flat out... what on earth do I do?

We bought the UppaBaby Vista system, so we have the seat part for it, but from what I understand she shouldn't go into that until she's 6 months old.

Suggestions would be appreciated, should i just scrunch her up in the pram, or put her in the seat really early? I don't have a car so the pram is meant to be my main mode of transporting her! Can't afford a different system, and I suspect we'd have the same issue anyway.

I think you can buy a kind of wedge to make the seat unit a bit flatter? I had the same problem way back when with ds in his bugaboo, he was in the seat fully reclined at about 8-9 weeks.

How long does she measure? Have you compared that to the growth charts? Because it would be surprising if she was that close to the 6 months point.

Not knowing the exact numbers, my strong first thought would be that she fits in fine and she just doesn't look as 'lost' in there as your friends with small-average babies. If you take a peek at older babies they're often very snug!

Many of my friends moved their babies in bugaboos and uppababies into the seat a little earlier than technically recommended, but still a lot later than 7 weeks - she won't be able to hold her head well enough and the pressure isn't good while she's growing so much.

We have the bugaboo buffalo, and we've moved DS into the seat at 4 months - he hated the bassinet as he couldn't see out. We bought a country cradles smartmuff which has wedge shaped cushion in it to flatten the seat out. Could you try that maybe?

We have the Vista and our dd went into the seat (laid flat) from birth (because I had a c section and didn't know that's what DH was doing when he was taking her out for a walk!)

She's fine!

she's 64cm - shows as above the 99.6th line on the chart, and just says "100th centile" on online calculators (both myself and DH are very tall). She's longer than several 4 month olds that I know. Pram is 69cm long - i think she'll fit for a few more weeks yet, just trying to plan ahead. Didn't think to check length when we were buying!

she's not quite holding her head yet, so I really don't want to move her into the chair part yet, just worried she'll be a bit scrunched up :s

You can get an infant insert ( here )for the Vista and then fully recline it

We had the same problem with DD, though a bit later on. The insert has a wedge cushion so she isn't scrunched up, and a head cushion thing to stop their heads flopping about. The company I linked to, winstanley pramworld, had it the cheapest I could find it and delivered in a few days.

DS hated the carrycot and went in to the seat slightly upright at around 4 months. He hated being laid flat.
He seems fine! But he did look drowned by it, and I felt as though my baby days were over with him! I was quite upset.

HomeIs - yes, I'll be really sad to put the pram part away, I love the baby-ness of it! :(

We have the uppababy vista & DS was a very long baby too. I think he outgrew the carry cot part at about 3 months.

The seat is fine on the flattest setting particularly as you'll have a cosytoes on it as well. Really don't worry.

Also you have bought the best pram for a long baby with tall parents. DS is now 26 months and still fits in it whereas all his little friends have outgrown their pushchairs months ago

My DD went into the Vista pram seat at 10 weeks, with the snug seat insert. She too is very long. She's taken a little while to adjust as she liked being in the bassinet, I think she felt more cocooned in it due to the high sides. She also struggled with the pram seat headrest as it put her neck into an awkward position, so we have loosened it and use it without strapping it to the main seat, so the position is more flexible. I'm so looking forward to when she has more head control and can sit up and enjoy it more!

The 6 months is more to cover themselves really. I don't know a single baby who has been in carry cot till 6 months! DD will be going into seat as soon as cosy toes arrives, she's 4 months and simply hates carry cot! She is nosey and can't see out. Won't sleep in it as can't spread her arms out. (We also have uppababy vista)
Recline it, use a newborn head support and you'll be fine

What footmuff are you getting for a vista?

I hate the Vista footmuff - as my mother pointed out, it looks like a bin bag. And they're expensive. We have a generic John Lewis fleece footmuff (blue stars) and it fits nicely.

I moved DS into the uppababy Cruz seat with the infant insert at about 10ish weeks with the seat reclined.

we too have the generic john lewis fleece (red stars) cosy toes for our uppababy - its done two winters but not a chance DS will fit in it now but then we rarely use the pushchair these days except when I go shopping

My DS was older than 7 weeks but he outgrew the pram quickly, I bought a seatliner which was made for the pushchair and then used the footmuff as a liner until he was stronger. Felt a bit make-shift but it did the job until he was strong enough for the seat unit.

I just thought I'd post to say I have the same pushchair and put my daughter in there between 10-12 weeks - as she was also very tall and hated the carrycot. Everything was fine and I'm sure I read on the american website where the pushchairs from that they use the main seat from 3 months over there.

You could try adding a baby carrycot pillow into pram. It will raise just slightly but will give a few more weeks.
