11 day old DS not pooing... is this a problem? any suggestions?

Our 11 day old ds has not pooed for several days. Wees plenty! but no poo.

has been a little lazy bf'ing (often going straight to sleep after a few minutes) but now seems to be getting the hang of it.

He seems to be 'straining' sometimes - not just wind, and cries when doing so. Farts a fair amount!

I'm a bit worried, and not really sure how to help the little mite.

How often does he feed?

It's a bit early for him not to be pooing every day.

When was the last time he pooed? What was it like?

He won't need orange juice, water, sugar in water, or any of the other "remedies" people like to suggest.

He may need feeding more often.

Weeing is a good sign.

b/f babies don't poo as much as formula fed ones...how long since he pood?? if he has a tummy ache, gently rub his tummy in a clockwise direction, without applying too much pressure....

Lulumama, not strictly ture about bfed babies not pooing as much as ffed ones. They're all different.

It's just that before two weeks at the earliest, a bfed baby should be pooing more regularly than every few days.

will go to back of the class...

I just wanted to nip in the bud the enormous weight of MNer postings of "it's all fine, bfed babies don't poo as much and can go ten days without pooing", etc - because that sort of thing refers to babies who are a bit older than 11 days.

hunkermunker · 01/10/2006 13:05

This explains it better

fair enough! will read and reeducate myself! ta !

WOW - thank you for the rapid replies.

Feeds every 3 hours (ish). Sometimes 1.5-2 hours apart. As I say, he can be a little lazy on the feeds and I have been 'topping him up' with some formula (MW advised etc).

Last time he pooed was probably 4 days ago! "Brown and floppy" seems to be the consensus.

No "mustardy" nappies.

He does 'fill' his wet nappies though.

mmmm...can;t really help you much more -- might be good to post on breast/ bottle feeding thread aswell as this one...esp as you are topping him up with formula...sorry!!

thomsc · 01/10/2006 15:29

thank you for the responses.

the top-ups have been around 15-30ml depending on when he just wouldn't take anymore / fell asleep.

He lost a bit more weight than normal (had a home birth but spent the first night vomiting his mothers blood and ickiness in hospital too)

last few days has been mainly bf with one formula only feed when DW needed some sleep.

he has just woken up demanding more bf...

we'll head to the Breast Feeding Clininc in the morning.
