7yo ds scared at night - how to handle?

DS is suddenly scared to go to sleep in his own room at night. Says he's scared of robbers and the house going on fire, etc.

Have been lying with him while he goes off to sleep; or working in my office next door to his room and popping back in to reassure him every 5 mins. Have also explained about burglar alarms, mummy and daddy being downstairs and not letting robbers in, etc., but he's not reassured.

He wakes very early too, and keeps coming into our room at 5.30am saying he's had a bad dream - but he never seems scared or worried by them.

Am I handling it right? What would you do/what has worked for you?
