7 month old not rolling - wasn't worried, but...

So my PFB DD is 7 mo and not rolling. She went front to back maybe five times between 4-5 months but not since. Hasn't ever gone back to front and very seldom even goes onto her side except asleep in bed at night when she does it a lot. She's been sitting unaided for over a month, though obviously I have to sit her up. She can stand holding one of my hands or leaning against the sofa if I out her there. If I put her in a crawling position on all fours she can hold it for a minute or so befire slipping onto her tummy.

I wasn't overly concerned about the rolling thing but my DH has started to worry, I started googling...and now I am worried! The development milestones info on the baby centre site says I should have taken her to the GP at six months if she wasn't rolling. Should I have done?

I've tried putting toys out of reach with her on both her back and front and she just gets cross. Basically she only wants to sit up now and doesn't like to be laid either way any more.

Any advice/reassurance, please?!

I would speak to your hv if worried, but anecdotally, ds never ever rolled over! He absolutely hated being on his tummy as well. He crawled at 10 months, walked 6 weeks later. Don't panic Grin

workingtitle · 12/10/2014 19:02

Well yes, speak to your HV but if all else is fine and especially if she's sitting happily unaided then she sounds fine. DS didn't roll and also didn't seem to want to crawl. he just screamed if you put him on his front. He loved standing and walking with you holding his hands. But then suddenly around 11 months he started crawling and rolling around and now (13m) he's very mobile and strong - and the moment I put him on his back he's straight onto his front and up on his hands and knees and isn't far off walking
I'm amazed at how quickly they can go from not looking any wjere close to doing something to mastering it!

My firstborn never really rolled and didn't crawl either.
She was walking by 14 months though and it now a bright and healthy 4 yr old.
Unless there are other concerns. Don't worry.

DS rolled once at 4 months and then didn't or couldn't be arsed to roll again until he was probably a year! I worried too but honestly, it has made zero difference.

No issues, walked fine, hit all milestones but this one.

Speak to the HV if your DP is concerned, just to alleviate any worry but I think some of them just don't want to!

noblegiraffe · 12/10/2014 19:15

Mine rolled a couple of times then never bothered again. I think I'd speak to the HV if they weren't rolling or sitting, but if they can sit, then their muscles are developing ok.

magicalmrmistofelees · 12/10/2014 19:17

DD is currently 11 months. She sat up unaided at 5 1/2 months but didn't roll until nearly 8 months! She started crawling as soon as she rolled, and is now cruising, standing up on her own and walking holding our hands. They all get there eventually Smile.

saltnpepa · 12/10/2014 20:12

I think if she's sitting up with a bit of support and standing with support then you have nothing to worry about. The rolling thing is just the first indicator about gross motor skills and tone and the fact she can do the above shows she has no trouble with either. I would take her to see hv tomorrow so they can tell you them same and then you won't worry anymore and can get on with enjoying her.

BuilderMammy · 12/10/2014 20:19

DD didn't roll till 11 months! She was late with most of the gross motor milestones but could talk the hind leg off a donkey before she could walk. She's a perfectly normal 4 year old now. I wouldn't worry if I were you!

LittleBearPad · 12/10/2014 20:26

DD didn't roll until 10 months when she started crawling. She walked on her 1st birthday. I really wouldn't worry too much. I did mention it to my HV at about 8 months who looked bored and said there was nothing to worry about.

andadietcoke · 12/10/2014 20:31

My 13 month old has never rolled. She's fine though - crawled just before her first birthday and is now cruising like a pro. I worried too!

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 12/10/2014 20:32

Dd1 didn't roll until well after she could crawl. Check with your hv if worried, but it's really common. Smile

clabsyqueen · 12/10/2014 20:32

Neither of mine rolled. It's not considered a 'milestone' in the way walking and talking are.

PollyIndia · 12/10/2014 20:42

Ds rolled at 8 months, crawled at 10, started walking at 1 and now at 2 is jumping and running faster than me (well, he accelerates faster than me!).
Don't worry at all.
I consider myself lucky he wasn't desperate to move!

OpposableThumbs · 12/10/2014 20:48

My DD didn't roll till 10 months, after she started crawling. She sat unaided at 5 months. I didn't cross my mind to be worried at the time as she did other things.

dogtanianandthe3muskehounds · 12/10/2014 20:52

Some babies just don't like rolling. Both my DDs were exactly like pps. Otherwise have developed completely normally.

Highlove · 12/10/2014 22:04

Thank you - feeling much more relaxed now. So hard not to get yourself wound up about this stuff, isn't it, even if rationally you know it's almost certainly ok.

I will mention it to my HV but tbh, she's been thoroughly useless so far and her reassurances wouldn't reassure me much, ifyswim.

My dd was sitting early too and rarely rolls now at 7 months. I reckon most babies spend more time on their backs and therefore master rolling in order to get at what they want, but if sitting, don't get a chance to develop those skills and don't need to as they can get at toys etc more easily when sitting.

kiki0202 · 13/10/2014 09:22

DS never rolled until he started crawling at 8 months and the it was only occasionally he could sit up propped at 3 months and alone by around 5 months though, he walked at 11 months and could ride a scooter by 2 and a bike with stabilisers by 2.4 he can also climb the large climbing frames made for older kids at the park so the not rolling has had no negative effects on his mobility or co-coordination.

AlmaMartyr · 13/10/2014 09:48

DD never rolled, barely crawled, then walked at 9 months. DS didn't roll either. They're both fine, very active kids. Don't worry about rolling too much :)
