Toilet problems with 3.5 year old

My DS1 is 3.5 years and has been toilet trained for about 6 months, he always asks to go for a wee but 9/10 it is too late and although he gets the vast majority in the loo his pants and trousers are already wet. He doesn't seem to know he is doing it, i'm not sure if he just gets carried away playing and forgets or if there is a real problem. I'm having a sample checked in case of infection but I don't think that is it as he doesn't seem to be in pain at all. If anyone has any ideas that would be great as it is getting frustrating for both of us and my washing machine can't cope!

Try taking him to the toilet when you need to go and see if he does to. have a dd so haven't any advice about aiming but I haev read somewhere possible here about a ping pong ball in the toilet to aim at works adn it does not flush away
