Blood around toddler's nose

Twice now - once last week, and again this morning - my 21 month old has woke up with blood around his nose. His cot is beside my bed and on neither occasion did I hear him, for example, bump his nose on the side of the cot. Last week he was just at the tail end of a cold but this week he's fine. What on earth could it be?

maybe a small nose bleed? Has there been any blood on his bedding?

My DS gets nosebleeds sometimes, especially at the end of a cold. Sometimes they are significant, other times they just present as a bit of blood in his nostril.

They started when he turned 2 and I asked the doctor about it but they said not to worry unless he was getting lots of really heavy ones in which case they would eventually consider cauterising it, but they aren't keen to do that unless it is really necessary.

Yes, there's some smears of dried blood. What might be causing the nose bleeds?

Thanks for your responses btw! I don't know whether to be worried about it or not

DS2 used to get fairly heavy nosebleeds in the middle of the night when he was small but they got fewer and further between until he grew out of them.

Or could your DS have picked his nose in the night and caught it with a finger nail?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 29/09/2014 08:05

This might sound a bit daft but I always got nosebleeds whenever there was going tk be really stormy weather. How is the weather where you are? Thunder and lightening used to set mine off (possibly pressure in the air?) It was ever so odd!

wheresthelight · 29/09/2014 10:09

I used to get nosebleeds in the night especially if I had been suffering from a cold or like the previous poster said if there was going to be a dramatic change in the weather especially if it was air pressure related.

the can be signs of other things such as allergic rhinitis which I was diagnosed with as an adult so if it carries on then I would suggest getting him checked by a gp

Is he having a dig around up there during the night? If it's only a little bit I wouldn't worry about it.

Hoviscats · 29/09/2014 11:06

I forgot to say before most of DS's nose bleeds are in the night too

DD (23 months) had this the other day when she woke from her nap. Crusted blood in the nostril and a bit on her top lip. She's also in the middle/end of a cold.

I reckon she tried to pick or wipe her nose and caught it with a fingernail.

Doodledot · 29/09/2014 18:45

Mine used to do that until after about age 2.5

MewlingQuim · 29/09/2014 18:48

My DD discovered nose picking at about 2y, if her fingernails have been raggedy she has made her nose bleed rooting for bogies.

Thanks everyone, I'll keep an eye on it but doesn't sound like it's anything serious
