Nappies smelling like ammonia

A friend kindly donated me a massive stash of cloth nappies, the problem is they all smell of ammonia. I have washed them all twice and the smell remains. Is there anything I can do to get rid of it? They were last used 2-3 years ago, is it too late?

Are they all in one or 2-piece?

When my 2piece ones start to smell a bit I wash the inners with a dishwasher tablet, then again with powder. This does a really good strip wash and gets rid of the wee smell.

I wouldn't do the wraps like this though, only the absorbent inners.

Leaving them outside to be rained on a few times and dried off with some sun can really help.

Hi I use all natural products on all laundry, including my my dd cloth nappies and we have never had a problem with the smell of them! I use a laundry sanitiser that is used with my normal powder. Here is the link to what i use can't recommend it highly enough! www.homescents.co.uk/PBSCProduct.asp?ItmID=11791673

I would use a big dose of bio powder and then a good rinse. If a nappy smells, it needs more detergent. (And non-bio is rubbish!)
