thumb sucking callouses

DS age 2.5 sucks his thumb when sleepy, and I'm happy he gets comfort from it, but big callouses appearing at thumb knuckles. Looks like the skin could break. Any ideas? I dont want to try to stop the thumb sucking itself (and dont think I could anyway!)

have a word with your chemist and ask them is there anything you can put on it during the day when he's not sucking it something to help it heal hope this helps

My ds had this too, and over time he sucks his fingers more or less, and the callouses come and go. There really is nothing you can do about it, short of weaning him off his thumb, because (as GP and pharmacist have both told me) anything you put on his thumb will end up in his mouth. I used to rub ds's fingers with Evening Primrose Oil, which is my panacea for almost all skin problems, or almond oil.
