2 year old nappy hell

I have a 2 year old boy who hates having his nappy changed. I do all wet ones standing up/on the run wherever possible but every poo nappy is a major drama. He refuses to lay down, kicks, screams, writhes about, wailing and screaming, grabs at his bum, kicks me and it's impossible to keep him on the mat. I have to literally pin him down and use force to keep him still on the mat and prevent shit from flying everywhere. It looks brutal, it feels brutal and I literally dread every poo and he poos a few times a day. He's not ready for a potty/toilet, I just know he's not. However, he is perfect for his nanny, no fuss at all. I don't know what's going on but I'm getting really upset each time and worry that he will have marks on his ankles from where I'm having to hold him down but if I don't hold him he will run all over the house covered in shit and I can't have that either. I have 2 older kids and neither did this. He's been like it since day one. HELP!

He poos several times a day? Has he tummy issues? A sore bum?

DoYouThinkSheSawUs · 18/09/2014 20:55

We had a stage of that and got a nappy change song on our phones. By Vicky Aldridge I think anyway it's got a chorus of tickle this little but here, tickle that little bit there etc. very silly but it worked. I think it gave her something to focus on, she enjoyed the kisses and tickles, and she knew what was coming.

Can you not change poos standing up too? I haven't managed to get DS to lie down since he was about 10 months!

Some days he poos once, other days more, I'm not worried about his tummy or pooing, I can't do it standing up, he'll just run about, a wee is ok because there's nothing falling off. He won't be distracted by anything, tried singing, toys, forbidden things like phones, nothing works.

Been there...change him in the bath? An empty bath obviously...

Sympathy OP and watching with interest. My 21mo DS is exactly the same as this. Every poo change is carnage and I dread it. Can't wait until he is old enough to potty train!

Again he lies still like a dream at nursery. Grrr.

I used to have some success with pinning him to the floor with my thigh but now he is so big and strong (98th centile) that I can't really pin him down any more. We basically wrestle whilst he screams and everything gets covered in shit. Brutal is the word.

Yup 23 month old DD and she hates it too! I tend to go for a distraction. Often I'll say "shall we change your nappy?" And she always says no then runs away. I'll then get her mat out and a favourite book and sit down at the mat and pretend to be having the most fascinating time reading it. A lot of the time she'll come out of curiosity and I'll tell her she can only join in if she lies down and has a change. Most the time it works, if not it's a pin down job.

Use pull ups and do it standing up?
