How do I explain to 2.9 DS that our cat will be put to sleep?

So last week I had the heartbreaking news that one of my 2 cats has an aggressive and incurable tongue cancer. She is likely to have to be put to sleep in the coming months. My DS is 2.9 and I have no idea how to explain to him that she will be leaving us soon. Has anyone any suggestions or experience of this please?

Oh dear, so sorry to hear about your cat.

The only thing I can suggest really is that when the time comes, try not to use the word 'sleep' when telling your ds that the cat has died, but quietly explain that she was very ill, and the animal doctor couldn't make her better.

Perhaps only mention that the cat is poorly for now?
