Double beds for kids

DS1 is currently in a small single bed so over the next year or two (he's 3.9 now) we'll look to get him a new bed and his younger brother can have the small single.

Ds1 is very lucky to have a truly ginormous bedroom which would easily hold a kingsize bed but this seems ridiculous for a young child. But if we just get him a normal single, it will look tiny in the room.

Would it be odd to get him a double at the age of 4 or 5? It would definitely look better in the room and we wouldn't have to get him another bed when he's a teen/young adult.

I had the tiniest of box rooms til I left home so this idea is alien to me :)

DDs bed is currently knackered and my DM has a nice standard size double she wants to get rid of ... so we're going to go for it. Her room is big enough and it will be handy for guests (ie the kids can double up) and sleep overs when she's older. She will be happy with a pretty floral for bedding.

My elder primary DC have doubles but my youngest has a single which we have put with the headboard against the wall extending into the room (rather than tucked in a corner). We did this for no reason other than I saw a gorgeous white wooden single and bought it on impulse.
In retrospect a double would have been better for nights that are disturbed.

I find the older DC are a bit past requiring lots of floor space - although they do have plenty of space anyway, I just don't think they really use it

Thanks for all the ideas. Think we will go for the double and he will have to lump it if he goes to uni and ends up in a single. Life is tough :)

I remember going to a friends for a sleepover aged about 9 and being amazed as she had a double bed! (we only had singles) I cried to my mum for about a week with a list of reasons as to why I needed a double bed!
I didn't get one till I was 18!!!

I had a single til I was 18 and even then didn't get a proper sized double bed. I'll be getting young DC a double when we move as most children seem to sleep better in them and he likes to starfish!

Yes its very surprising how much space a little body takes up when asleep Grin
