Giving DS infant gaviscon - any tips?

We have just got a prescription for infant gaviscon to try and help my little ones reflux (he is 5.5 months old). It seems a bit more complicated than I thought it would be, having to make it up and give it several times a day...

Just thought if ask if there are any suggestions or tips which would be useful. I bf mostly with one ff before bed.

Thanks.

I used to make it up using a tiny amount of cooled boiled water in a cup, and administer it with the Calpol syringe. Start the feed, give Gaviscon, then more BF straight after.

And it can constipate babies horribly. Perhaps try to give some water at some point during the day to keep his fluids up.

Gaviscon didn't help with my dds reflux at all. Ranitidine was what helped.

But you have to see if the Gaviscon helps first before the care plan is escalated to include ranitidine/domperidone/omeprazole.

I used a Calpol syringe with great success and we had to do it for 6 months. Because I was breastfeeding I would push the syringe in slightly as DD latched on and gently squirt a little in at a time. When she was bigger I could give it to her directly as I think she got to quite like it. It was a life saver for us and eventually I just realised she didn't need it anymore so stopped. Good luck with it.

We only ever made it up with 5ml of water not the 15ml on the instructions - getting that much into bf baby takes ages and at the beginning he'd scream and vomit it back. And yes watch for constipation. We did it for 3 months then got ranitidine - so much easier and works better but you do have to jump through the gaviscon hoop I think!

Gaviscon was just too much of a faff as DS was EBF. We tried for a few days but then I went back to the GP and asked for some Ranitidine instead and DS was like a different baby Smile
