Toys for newborn babies?

I don't know if this is a very silly question but I don't know the answer, am due today (no signs of anything starting yet...) and I've realised that we have minimal toys for the baby, a couple of soft toys and a couple of rattly ring toys... Do tiny babies need toys? When do we start buying them anything? I realise this is just me finding something else to panic about that isn't my impending labour, but now I'm thinking I'm depriving my unborn of shiny playthings lol!! Someone grown up and sensible tell me what to do

My dd didn't start showing any interest in toys till about 3-4 months, so don't worry you won't need anything like that for a bit yet.

Just being awake is entertaining for a newborn.

My 9 week old (4 weeks adjusted) isn't interested in toys yet! Don't stress about it. Good luck for when the time comes

My LO wasn't interested in toys until she was much older. Cuddly toys and other such paraphernalia was shoved in a cupboard until a few weeks ago (DD now coming up to 19 weeks).

All your little baby will want is your love and cuddles.

Thank you peeps :) I shall not panic then lol! No movement yet, got a feeling were in for the long haul with this comfy little bugger haha!!

Lamaze Toys are a good one though for first toys as they have bright colours & also black & white (baby can only see so far in early days)

None of mine were interested in toys till 5/6 months. The best 'toys' they had up to about 12 months was the nuby tether toys - keys, bug shaped mirror type thing.

From when they could sit up the most loved toy was a 99p football from morrisons and a pretend mobile phone.

They really don't need toys from day 1 - but things my boys liked once they were a couple of months old were black and white and red board books/cot bumper/Lamaze toys and a cot mobile

From 4 months their favourite toy was a wooden spoon and a foil emergency blanket (despite tonnes of normal proper toys around!)

Agreed! Any "crap" empty baby wipes, wooden spoon, empty yoghurt pots etc ....

Interest in toys started around 3 or 4 months. Now at 7 months favourite toys are the doorstop, ikea bags, the raincover of the pram, a packet of wetwipes. We were given tonnes of toys as gifts and have not bought any.

I agree with everyone else. Small babies are just not interested in toys.

S/he will be most interested in staring at your face at first! Later on, I've found baby groups and play areas quite useful in deciding what toys to buy and what not to waste money on.
We aquired one of these which has a black and white side for new-borns to stare at when your face is not an option. Our 2m + baby loved it and I wish we'd had it before!

Don't buy any toys! Your baby won't be interested in them for a while yet, and you might find yourself given lots anyway.

Two things mine was interested in, when he became old enough to be interested in anything but boob: a small plastic water bottle with some lentils in, used as a shaker (I taped the lid on), and one of those baby play mats with the arch over it with rattly rings on (baby gyms, I think some places call them?).

Ds liked black and white patterns to look at from a few weeks old, but he only took an interest in toys from about 4 months.

Brilliant thank you all, good to know I'm not depriving the unborn one already haha!! I shall hold on to my purse for now and not go toy crazy!

Someone on here said a while ago they bought one of those foil emergency blankets and the baby loved lying on it and crinkling it, I haven't tried it though
