Can babies suddenly develop reflux?

My DS is almost 5 months old and has been bringing up some of his milk after each feed for the last two weeks.

I wind him after his feed and he burps really well but then 10 seconds later a large volume of milk will come out.

Sometimes when I'm holding him I can almost hear him gagging as though milk is coming up but then he's swallowing it back down. He's in his cot now and I can hear him doing it.

The last few nights have been unbearable in that he initially sleeps for 45-60 minutes then wakes up screaming and in obvious pain. He then gets really worked up and only calms after lots if back rubbing which eventually causes a vomit.

We have just tilted his mattress by placing rolled up towels under one end to see if that helps.

Im just confused as I thought reflux was something that is present from birth and not something that just papers at any age.

I don't know if it's a coincidence it not but over the last few weeks he's been having calpol and Nurofen regularly due to his teething - I don't know if these can cause such symptoms?

I think I'm going to take him to see the nurse at my GP surgery tomorrow.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Sounds like my dd - at 4 months I found out she had cows milk allergy (cma). This caused her reflux and she was also very unsettled, could not sleep for long, had explosive nappies and long bouts if painful crying. She also had poor weight gain.

I had seen GPS and hvs numerous times but nobody helps. They just said it was colic and gave us infant gaviscon or told me to use infacol!!

Eventually I saw a gastric paediatrician who diagnosed the cma, prescribed nutramigen formula and omeprazol for the reflux. She was better within a day.

If you're little one has any of these symptoms please please please speak to your gp. And put your foot down until you get the help you need.
