Any ideas for entertaining a 1 year old and a 2.8 year old simultaneously

Ds doesn't sleep (although should as he needs to, but won't) and dd slept 45 minutes this morning ...... and that was it. Not sure how on earth I'm supposed to keep both of them entertained simultaneously through a whole day, without a break. Normally, I let ds watch a bit of tv and do some jigsaws/cooking/painting with me when dd is asleep but couldn't do that today as with dd around all those activities (except the tv obviously) are impossible. The only things they both like are books and I can't read to them all bl**dy day! Any suggestions! I really didn't do much with either of them today except go to the shops.

I have DS11mths and DD 2.9yrs. I let DD do messy stuff in kitchen with door gate on and play balls, cars etc with 11mth old just outside kitchen door then can do both. Also boxes work a treat. Packing boxes are cheap to buy DD draws on them to make a castle, tent etc and DS loves to crawl through them, sit in them etc. Bubbles too are a good option for both. Also get younger child used to playing with things in high chair/play pen so older child can do something else. It took a couple of weeks to slowly increase time spent in play pen but now he'll do half an hour which means I can do painting etc with DD. Start off giving a snack in high chair or play pen followed by books, toys etc.

Good luck
