Hi YL

I'm just starting my second year with the OU, working towards a degree in Social Sciences with Sociology. Are you starting with DD100?

I haven't got young children and I'm not working at the moment, so I'm not the best person to offer advice on time management, but I do know that lots of people do manage to do it successfully and I'm sure you will too.

Have you accessed FirstClass yet? There is lots and lots of great support on there.

DD100 is a brilliant course (I did it last year), but I will warn you that it doesn't cover much psychology.

FirstClass is the OU's conferencing system - like a big mumsnet for OU students. You should get a letter from the OU soon with your login details, and you'll receive a CD-ROM with your course materials containing the FC software (although you can access it via the web as well once you have your login details). There's a DD100 Conference which is fantastically supportive - one of the October starters has started a Yahoo Group too which you can join here

Hi

I'm in the middle of an OU degree (well, 90 points down 270 to go!!). I work 30 hours per week and have three children and it is hard work but is very rewarding. My next course starts in January and I'm looking forward to it.

Are you doing an online course or will you have tutorials?

Molesworth · 14/09/2006 12:23

I'm doing DD201 (Sociology and Society) starting in October, then overlapping it with D318 (Culture, Media and Identity) starting in Feb 07. For my sins!

I am loving it though. I'm amazed at how many friends I've made through the OU when I was expecting it to be an isolated sort of experience

I loved my tutorials, never really felt 'right' with on line courses.

When I was doing A103, there was a woman there who had two under 4, was pregnant and was doing two 60 point courses at once

Bet she didn't mumsnet !!

Hi, I am starting DD100 next month too! I am so looking forward to my first tutorial on Oct 5th.

I can't wait to do something for me and not just for dh and our 3 children! Good luck, maybe we will all bump into each other soon

Molesworth · 21/09/2006 23:15

ooh you've got me wondering who you are on FC now!

have you found the OUSA DD100 conference yet?

Stargazer · 21/09/2006 23:18

Hi YL79 - I'm in my 4th year now - only two more to go (but then I'll probably do some short courses) . It is hard work and sometimes finding the time (especially after a tough day with the kids - 10 and 5) it can be hard to motivate myself to study. But having to work towards assignment deadlines - helps (mostly). Good luck, I'm sure you'll really enjoy it. Firstclass (as others have mentioned) is a great place for support from other OU students - with a huge variety of interests.

I've got my OU exam on the 12th October. Next Feb I'm doing a 60 pointer and a 30 pointer. I'm 3 years in and want to do the final 3 in 2. I have 5 kids and the hardest thing is getting onto the computer in the evenings because my 2 eldest are doing their own homework. sigh............. Which was not much fun when I had a 4,000 word TMA to do.
